Just reloaded my first rounds

Well, I finally got around to reloading my first rounds after a ton of research and a bit of practice (dummy rounds).

I loaded up some Bear Creek moly coated 158 gr 38 specials with a min load of unique and worked up from there in .1 grain increments (six of each load 4.0-4.5 grain, right out of my Lyman manual). These will be fired through a .357 magnum. I figured this is one of the safer ways to start things out.

I will let you know how they shoot after tomorrow.

Re: Just reloaded my first rounds

Congratulations... its a liberating fweling that is indescribale unless youve reloaded which you have so you know the feeling! Youre gonna truly love rolling your own. Youre gonna be able to make ammo that would cost you a whole lot more than you would ever pay for retail at least.. welcome to the club, enjoy!

Enjoy the nervous feeling of touching them off, and then the large grin that comes afterwards! Congrats!

Just got back from the range. They all worked!

On a more serious note, my revolver seemed to like the load with 4.3 grains of unique.

There is nothing like shooting your own ammunition and saving a lot of money. It gives you a feeling of pride and self-reliance. Congratulations on adding a new dimension to your shooting.

Sounds like you are doing things right. Just make a few to test and not a bunch you have to pull later on. .38 special is probably one of the best loads to start with. It is the first pistol caliber I ever loaded. I like loading .357 magnum loads even more. Unique is a forgiving powder many start with. Later on you probably will start looking at other powders to see how they preform. Remember to keep track of just how each load you have made worked. It helps from time to time. I always look in my book to see what it is I'm going to be loading when I switch to a different load. A little thing like being off one grain of powder in pistol loads makes a big difference. I don't trust memory in loading.

I hope you remember how you felt when you pulled the trigger of your first reload.

"38 specials...fired through a .357 magnum." This is a great way to learn for a couple of reasons. The 38 Special is such a joy to reload and even if you make a real serious error (like double charging a case) the .357 will probably not blow up.

Make sure you do not get a round stuck in the barrel...
