Primer Question????????

I am new to reloading and was wondering if primers could be interchanged. For Example, the reloading table calls for Federal 100, can I substitue any small pistol primer in its place? Thanks in advance.

I always thought they could. Which loading manual are you using?

If you're near maximun on the charge back it down before switching primers.

From what I understand it is not a good practice to get into but I have done it successfully. Back down the load and start to work it back up again. NEVER exceed max load though.

Every primer brand/type creates a different pressure curve, thus affecting velocity and accuracy. If you are at max, then back off the powder charge weight when switching primers.

Mfox--These guys are all TALKING SENSE, Mfox! Heed them. There are old reloaders, and bold reloaders, but there are no old, bold reloaders.

Whenever you change anything in yr recipie, back down to the starting weight of powder and work up again carefully.

918v has it most technically accurate. By experimentation, you may find a primer whose resultant pressure curve fits yr gun and yr load noticeably better than any other, in terms of velocity and accuracy. That would be the primer to use. It's called "tuning a load to the gun," and it is one of the major reasons some reloaders reload.
