While loading 45's last night on the 650, I was thinking of this discussion. I'm using my own cast 200 RFP from a lee six cavity. Lubed with Lee Liquid Alox,(LLA), tumbled then sized, the noses of the bullets were also coated.
I wondered if the tumbler could remove this LLA from the noses of the boolits,(and the casings, as it was sticky getting on my fingers), so into the tumbler they went! About 40 of them for 1.5 hours. Sadly the LLA is too tough to remove that way, it became inpregnated with dust from the new ground corn cob. I will have to manually remove it before firing. I'm going to take the chrono with me the next time I go to the range, I'll chrono those along side the rest of the 200 I loaded last night. The charge weight is WW-231, 5.3 grains, which leaves at least half the case empty, plenty of room for the powder to move around. Velocity AND on-target evaluation will be done. I may pull a couple apart to see if there's any visible degradation of the powder as well.

Linear Thinker,
"The powder inside has partially turned to reddish dust, mixed in with extruded powder." That is NOT by any stretch of the imagination a problem caused by tumbling the rounds. That reddish dust is a casebook example of what happens when powder starts to break down CHEMICALLY, likely caused either through a manufacturing defect or improper storage, or both. The same thing would very likely have happened had you never tumbled those rounds.

Think I Reopened a Can Of Worms
on this subject. I still can't believe, that 30 minutes or so tumbling the finished loads, will screw up the powder. The Accurate Powder guy seemed to agree on that point.
But, this morning I toweled with Alcohol a hundred and fifty 9mm instead of throwing them into my tumbler, not fun ragging them shiny. |
