T/C Superglide v. normal sabots

Almost out of projectiles and need to buy some more.

I am currently shooting superglide sabots. They are not difficult to load, but they are not super easy either. They claim you only need one hand, but I can't remember any but maybe the first round on a super clean barrel with lots of gun butter going in that easily.

The normal sabots are 25% cheaper($5/15). Does anyone know if there is really a difference between the two types? There is also a thirty pack of the normal which saves me a little more.

MMP sabots probably makes the Super Glide sabots for TC.
They offer 3 diameters with their own label:

HPH12 - .507 -.508
HPH24 - .505 -.506
3Petal-EZ - .502 - .504

The main alternative are the Harvester Crush Rib sabots which the maker doesn't list the diameter of, but which are known to be easier to load.

Here's a photo with some measurements that may also depend on the bullet and who is doing the measuring.
But the 3Petal-EZ is shown measuring .499 - .500 in the bottom photo.

I use the Hornady 250grn SST (same bullet as your T/C shockwaves which are made by Hornady) with the low-drag sabot. They are deadly accurate and very easy to load - easily done with one hand.

Shooting the TC packaged combo my Thunderhawk is as accurate as any rifle I own except my K31. Inside 100 yards they might be about tied. I bought it used for a steal planning to buy a new ML with breech plug after a few years, but have never upgraded as it is just so accurate.

When I went to Gander mountain they had 15 for $16, which was $5 less than on the site. I didn't want to mess around with my set-up at that price so I bought them without any second thoughts. That will last me at least two years of white tail hunting. Probably 3 or 4 if I don't bump my scope.

Love those PowerBelts!! No sabot, no patch, groups like a rifle, are .50 caliber and drops deer like a hammer. Right now shooting the 245 aerotip.

Awesome topic jw062! Just out of curiosity, you didn't mention the gun you were using...

Outstanding info cap!

As we all agree every smoke-pole likes it's own formula. I personally swab/clean between every shot even in the field. I want every shot to (as much as possible) the same as the one before. I'm waiting for the game to lay down and die anyway, might as well clean the rifle. Not only that, but if I don't shoot again for a few days, my rifle is not having it's barrel rotted inside-out from spent BP.

Don't mind a sabot loading a bit tight. My (sabot) (bullet gun) (TC Triumph) likes the Barnes TMZ's or TM's. Likes Hornady's and also the TC Shockwaves. Shoots all of them about the same. It hates Powerbelts. It also doesn't like Superglide's. Just had a box of Hornady FPB's given to me and they look great. Will try them for sure. A non-sabot round for sabot guns. These have my interest.

This being said, I go for the hardest hitting round my gun likes, with the most accuracy, but also the most deadly on game. The Barnes are the best all around (for this gun) no doubt about it.

Just my 2-cents. All the best... and best of luck!

Warbird

I'll bet you're shooting a CVA? Those guns love the Powerbelts and were designed to shoot that bullet/sabot.

I really like that concept as the bullet is bigger, loads easy and acts just like a Minie-ball. It hits hard!

I have only fired a few sabots through my gun, but for diameter there seems to be very little difference compared to different bullets out of a centerfire.

Right now I am spending almost $2 a shot and I was thinking when I run through these, and I may just take them out and shoot them, i should buy a mold and start pouring my own.
