Old 30-06

I have an old 30-06 that my grandfather gave me. It has no manufactures name on it. the barrel is 27 inches long, the gun is 46 1/2 inches long. The front sights are pressed on over the top of the barrel 1/2 inch back from the end of the barrel. There are 4 markings just below the front sight that are a capital W then 2 different figures and the symbol 8-17. There is also different symbols stamped down towards the bolt. Does anyone know the make and year model of this.

I'm not nearly an expert on proof or import marks. Can you post some pics? That would make the job a lot easier.

Off the top of my head it could be some sort of 1917 enfield...

Doest it have a "dog leg" bolt? That would be a dead giveaway.

But there is no way to tell without a picture.

In the "curio and relic" section of this forum you will find pictures of various old military rifles that may clue you in. If this were a guessing game i'd say an 03 springer.

Sounds like a WWI Model of 1917 US. Enfield Rifle, made by winchester, (others were Remington & Eddystone)

The front ring of the actionm where front of bolt disappears, try laying piece of paper ther and rubbing the side of the point of a lead pencil. And see if there any marking that show-up.

Look at the bolt handle for markings "W" ,"E", "R" or "USMC".
Anything also that looks like an "eagle head"?

Most probably, the 8-17 marking on the barrel just below the sight tells you that the barrel was made in August of 1917, What do the markings look like? A would be a great help.

This is a Winchester Receiver Model of 1917 with a JA barrel. "Re-Arsenaled" in WWII or so I have been told.

On the top of the receiver, there should be some manufacturer's name.
