Best ammo for use in a semi-auto .22

Hey I just got a semi auto 22 and wondered what ammo you use I thought I was going to use cci minimags in 22lr I just wondered if there was a cheaper option that would cycle reliably

I have a freind i work with that just got a 22. Store dude told him he must use CCI also or it would not function right. He has put every brand down that thing and never a issue with it yet, I have had great luck with all ammo, with the exception of wolf ammo. Got a brick of them and after 50 rounds and numerous jams,, i have all left but the one box i opened to try.

Tell us the specific gun and we can direct the question to the appropriate forum.

I always thought part of the fun of getting a new .22 was seeing what it liked to eat.

Buy lots of different brands and see what yours likes best. Might be a mongrel and eat anything. Might be a thoroughbred and demand Eley.

A friend of mine had an S&W model 41 semi-auto target pistol that was durn near as accurate with Thunderbolt bulk ammo as with Eley. Strange. That was around 1980 or a little later.

I had a Colt .22 conversion on a 1911 that liked Remington standard velocity. Again, strange.

Good Luck.

I had a Walther p22 that devoured CCI stingers. Use the higher quality/velocity stuff.

Gun specific

I know that with the .22 semiautos it can be very gun specific. I have heard 10/22s will eat anything but Sig Mosquitos can be picky...

So that being the case what gun are you referring to? Ifyou get this switched to the rifle or handgun forum you will get more/better answers.

Sorry for the vague response to the vague question.

My .22's love CCI MiniMags.

With how little .22lr ammo costs to begin with, I never understood why people buy that "bulk" crap that is notorious for failures. The aggrivation is not worth the savings, IMO.

I don't think so.....
I had some of the Russian steel case .22's that were so bad they wouldn't work in anything.
That was way back in late 1998.
I fired what I could out of one box then stuck the rest of the brick on the shelf as Y2K barter...
I figured if life as we know it ended, someone would trade something for ammo, regardless of what it was.

I still have that brick to this day!

Never know when the end of the world as we know it is going to happen...

If by 'best' you mean most reliable, I'd say it's the CCI Mini-Mags hands down.
These are available in bulk as Blazer (made by CCI and same specs as the Mini-Mag with a 40gr LRN). I shoot a lot of these and don't have any issues in any of my guns.

My favorite .22LR rounds are the Winchester Super-X SS, based on more power in that little .22LR cartridge. These also have proven to be very reliable.

Best 'cheap' bulk for me have been the Federal 525ct boxes. I use a lot of these too as I can still get them on sale for under $15. Not as good as the Blazer but they're decent plinkers in most guns but not all.

ive accumulated boxes of all kinds of 22 just for testing purposes....new stores, gun shows, internet sales, etc. Other than doing internet searches and finding a consensus of people who like a certain bullet for the same gun you have, all you can do is test. Like others here ive had good luck with cci...whether its mini-mags or green tag.

I agree with DaleA....

I agree with DaleA.... buy a lot of different brands of 22lr and try them out. My Ruger 10/22 likes the bulk Federal. I have purchased some of the Blazer 40 grain bulk 525 pack. I called CCI and they confirmed that the bulk 525 pack is the exact same product as the 50 round box. I have had good results with the Blazer. I currently have a number of boxes of 22lr that I have tested that has been and keep to use if I pick up a new rifle or pistol. One time I bought a youth rifle for my son and found that the only round it liked was the CCI subsonic shorts. The shorts were dead on target and the long rifles rounds were all over the place. The sales guy that told your friend to only buy the CCI only may have been recommending the CCI copper coated bullets. Some semi-auto rifles will not function well if the bullet is not copper coated. Hope this helps.....Play Safe..... Lemmon

Best >22lr Ammo

I had a friend tell me he was shooting some ammo that shoots really good. I noticed he couldn't hit anything and his groups were horrible. When I asked him to explain shoots real good he said it went bang every time. I gave him some decent ammo and he immediately went to shooting gooder.

To me, ammo must function well and shoot accurately. One without the other is no good.

In my guns I've found that the cheap bulk packed ammo does the first just fine but not the second.

To use for what?

Without knowing anything else other than the OP's thread opener, I would say CCI Mini-mags.

I have found the Federal Lightnings (510B's) from Walmart to be a good all around ammo choice for the price.

In the bulk packs, I prefer Federal bulk packs over all the others.

CCI blazers are generally a pretty reliable choice for inexpensive plinking fodder.

That GM ammo is not cheap. If you are looking for standard velocity ammo, I would suggest that you try to find some CCI Standard Velocity which sells for $25/brick (10 50-ct boxes) at Dicks and try those. They cycle well in most semi-autos and have typically better accuracy than regular mini-mags.

CCI Mini-Mags are cheaper than that at Walmart (plastic 100 ct boxes).

What exactly are you looking for in 22 ammunition? What are you using it for? Is your gun a rifle or handgun? We need some help here...

If you are just plinking, most buy bulk packs and blast away. If you have a few jams or fail to fires, you eject or clear them and keep on shooting.

As far as accuracy goes, most try out a lot of different types of ammo and see how it both shoots and functions in their gun.
