Finally got the brass and mold to shoot it. I discovered it had some chamber issues I hasn't noticed before. Working to smooth those out. I hope to be able to shoot it soon.

If you want to smooth a chamber take a wood dowel, cut a slit in the end and put a piece of emory cloth in the slit. Chuck it up in a drill, add a little oil and use it like a cylinder hone.

Good idea Hawg. I will give that a try. I have already made some improvement, but the shells still stick and have to be knocked out. I'm using a bore mirror to get a better look.

Just don't go overboard with it. Once you get it smooth you can put some polishing paste on a bore mop and polish it up bright.

What Hawg described is a polishing stick. You can also make one of a brass rod with a slot cut down the center. We made and used them to polish our rifle chambers after we used the finishing reamer to cut the chamber and checking the headspace. A polished chamber makes for smoother extraction.

BTW, I used 320 grit and went up to 400 grit.

My 50-70 is a cut down NY State rifle and was in a fire. The forearm is charred much and needs replacing. Rest seems fine. Apparently its original civilian owner hunted with it till he was too old about 20 years ago.

The poor thing is locked up somewhere. I never restored it, such as it can be, due to concern about the heat from the fire.

Perhaps I can dredge it up...

Uh Oh!....

Does anyone see "opportunity" here?

This sounds like a project.

Wish it was mine. I know what I would do.

I confess to being a bit out of my depth on this, but could crowning the barrel be affected by if the barrel is a sleeved .58 caliber musket barrel (some early ones were)? Mine has a perfectly flat crown that appears to be factory, but it is a sleeved barrel and I don't think I would use a rounded crown.

I got the chamber issue solved, but I found another I don't know if I can fix. It will still shoot, but the ejector hook on the breech block is partially broken off. It's function is to start the round out of the chamber. If I use a rod and start the shell casing out of the chamber, it pops out with authority. Another breech block would fix that, but I have spent so much time on this one I hate to chuck it now. If the weather holds, I will shoot it this weekend. I made up a few rounds already. I'll start a new thread on the results. Thanks again for all the help!

Mine is sleeved and I kept the crown flat. I did try to break the inside edge at the end of the lands.

TK...

The design of the ejector on the conversions was problematic.

That is one of the things that was upgraded as the arm went through the transition to later versions.

The early ejectors just do not catch enough of the rim of the shell and then just slips off the shell with the shell still in place in the chamber. Especially true (IMO) if the chamber is less than perfect.

I Feel A Little Silly...

Guys, my NY .50-70 is, of course, a Remington Rolling Block. Not a Trapdoor.

I knew that. I KNEW that! Didn't cross my mind to write it...

Figured as much Doc. Sad thing is that it pops out real nicely if I get it started a bit. I think I will live with it.

I bought brass and a lee mold from Track of the Wolf. 60 grs of Pyrodex by volume, felt wad, lubed 515 dia. 450 grain pure lead bullet. I made a rig to seat the bullet on my lee press.

I hope to shoot them this weekend.
