Type 53 with a light refinish

Hey guys, I just wanted to share the light refinish I did on my Type 53. I still wanted it to look like a battered war horse and not a new one. So I just ensured all the cosmoline was out of the stock the best I could then I sanded the stock but not so much as to take all the dents and dings out of it. Then It got a light coat of stain and a few coats of poly. It turned out great I think. Now it doesnt look like it was drug behind a truck. This is my best shooting Mosin believe it or not. Even though not a part on it matches. The bore on this thing is fantastic.

I can understand the need to refinish the ChiCom copies. Those rifles (along with Type 56 SKS's) were beat beyond all belief, some stocks even unusable/splintery. Just hope no one goes refinishing any Westinghouse or Remingtons (

).

Good job on that stock, by the way, looks nice.

Thanks, yeah none of my Russians will be or need to be touched. This poor thing looked like it was dragged behind a truck. When I layed it across the rest and squeezed off 10 rounds I was impressed, so it deserved some love and a permanent spot in the collection.

Sweet. I think 1954 is the year my Tokarev was made... Or maybe it was 1953. Uh, who cares, sweet rifle!

Thanks, yeah she is a hodge podge of parts but it sure does shoot good.

I'm certainly no Puritan when it comes to collecting, IMO, if it shoots well, it's good in my book. The target won't care whether the numbers match or not!

This is very true. The Type 53 got a lot of flack from the online community. Why I don't know. Yeah the stocks were beat to crap, but the bores, the one on mine and ones I've read about were in fantastic shape. All the metal work on the guns is/are in great shape, fit and function wise. Maybe because they are "Chinese" but in my gun experience, I've never met a Chinese Firearm that is not as good if not a little better than other countries of manufacture.

I agree. Why should I pay $600 for a rifle then pay $1 per round when I can spend $100 on a Chinese mpain and $0.20 per round. Now, if you want to be hunting or precision shooting, that's a different story, but for a 100 yard range gun it is great.

The Chinese definitely used their MN's...to plant crops as well, I think.

I was really surprised when I received mine that the bore had a mirror shine and minimal pitting after I pushed out the huge cosmoline plug. Never have put a round down the tube yet.

I still can't reconcile how a weapon used and abused so badly based on the condition of the stock, received TLC on the bore getting the primer salts washed out regularly. Yours have matching numbers? Rare to find that...mine had all BUT the bolt, matching.
