Which AR to buy
I am a novice about assault rifles and shopping for an AR. Which ones should I consider shopping for in the $2,500 price range.

What are you looking to do with the rifle? Is that for a rifle and optics? Do you want to spend your whole budget or be able to get a nice rifle and some ammo?

I was going to suggest buying the "standard", a Colt, until I saw your $2500 range!
Will leave that up to others. Enjoy!

(Nitpick incoming) An assault rifle will be out of your price range, as M16s tend to go for about $15,000. An AR-15, which is semi-auto only (thus not an assault rifle), will be in your price range, and not have so much paperwork with the ATF involved.
If you want a "duty rifle," I'd suggest looking at Colt, LMT, BCM and a few others. If you want a rifle for the range, and don't require mil-spec or above components, there are a lot of manufacturers that will work nicely. If you desire a hunting rifle, that will change things a bit. If you want a target rifle, that's going to look very different from the common 16in carbines. |

Depends on what you want to do.
If you just want to plink..........pretty much any AR will do. (Colt if you want the best) If you want to get into Service Rifle, any lower with a good trigger, and a White Oak Upper. Good to 1000 yards. (Just an example, my service rifle trigger cost a bit over twice what I paid for the lower). $800 will get you a super White Oak upper. If you want to do some 3-Gun style shooting then one of the flat top shorties or Civilian style M4 with some sort of red dot sights. All will with in your $2500 budget, So take the rest, buy some reloading gear and components and load good bullets. No AR or any other rifle is worth a hoot if you shoot crap ammo.

For 90% of users, any functional AR is good enough. If you're one of those logo ego guys, blow a big wad on a "prancing pony" logo but that doesn't mean you've got a better rifle than many other brands.
I can lay 6 rifles with the brandname covered on a table and let you fire them each 10 times. I'll bet a fair bit of change you can't determine which is a Colt and which is one I assembled in my basement. |

You really cant go wrong with any of the ones suggested, maybe you want to look into a modular one like the LMT?

$2500 range? You really have that much money available for an AR? If so I'd suggest Noveske or Daniel Defense.

+ 1 on the colt and a 1,000 rounds of ammo . That right there is only $1,600 . Then maybe red dot , extra mags , nice case and your budget is just about gone .

$2,500 to spend?
Wow, I'd buy a Daniel Defense M4, an Aimpoint Micro and spend whatever you have left on ammo. Here's a DD demo: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=R9g5QErEfqY . |

Did someone mention the horsey?
Here ya go... This is the Colt LE6920, with an Aimpoint CompM2 and a YHM back up iron sight, co-witnessed to sight right through the optic. I have also mounted a Fenix TK11 as a weapon light--the bipod has been replaced with a Harris bipod. I also installed an Ergo grip--very comfortable. If you wish, you can also remove the rear sights in this configuration, and install a scope, with the proper mount and rings. It is utterly reliable and very accurate. I currently use it as a patrol rifle. Buy it with confidence!

$2500 price range? thats top dollar for an AR, why not because you are new to AR's. Buy an Colt 6920, great deal and value. Colt has been making them from the 70's and thats who I went with for my first AR. $1200 OTD.
Unless you are going to fight a war, or shoot comp I don't see why waste $2500 on an AR. When you can have a great AR for $1200 and 2k + rounds and a nice scope for $2500, which you will probably never shoot out. Quote:

I got a 6920 (I think anyways) Colt and I LOVE it... All my friends wish they'd have bought a nicer rifle. Keep your sights on a Colt, put the rest of your money in some good gear for your rifle and ammo. Reloading? Well... Maybe not yet... Maybe an Aimpoint and some MagPul gear.

I must be out of touch, but I haven't seen an H&R lower since 1973. Forgive my ignorance. Where might these lowers be found? Are they resuscitated dmilz or what. Same for GMs, which I haven't seen in ever so long. Just for nostalgia 's sake.

In the 2500 dollar price range I would go with a LWRC or a Barrett rec7.

You'd be surprised how the required accessories add up for a nice AR. I certainly was.
Colt 6940 for about $1500.00 then add Magpul CTR Stock ($79.95), LaRue Tactical Sling ($69.95), Aimpoint Red Dot M4S ($756.00), LaRue Forward Grip ($107.00). And don't forget plenty of decent range ammo. 1,000 rds. of Lake City XM855 ($400.00). I've described the rifle at the bottom of my picture, the only difference is the top Colt has an Aimpoint Micro T1 ($650.00) so it's a bit less expensive. I wish you the best of luck with your purchase.

Get an FN SCAR, (5.56 or .308 NATO) or a Remington ACR for that price range. Better than ANY standard AR
