Optics, M1 Carbine?

Someone here might be able to help me. I have an new M1 Carbine, .30 cal. made by Auto Ordinance. My right eye isn't good so I have been looking for a scope but can't find one that doesn't interfear with the action. I installed a mount from Cheaper than dirt, mounts with the rear site threaded screw hole, rail mount. Installed a scope with 3" eye relief but because the stock is so short it is not comfortable to shoot because the scope sits so far back. I then got extended rings, thought it would move the scope farther forward (and it did) which moved the scope forward, just right. Another problem, now about every 3rd or 4th round stovepipes in the action. I think I should go to a red dot or something similiar, Does anyone have any suggestions? I don't want to have to change the mount, or drill holes but seeing as how my right eye isn't that clear at 100 yds I need something that will magnify the view.

Any and all suggestions will be deeply appreciated, Thanks.

From personal experience, straight irons are your best bet. I have a mount just like yours and had it on mine but with the spent casing hitting the mount everytime I kept losing my zero. The M1 Carbine is now precision weapon by any means. You might tighten up groups alittle but not by much. Can you shoot left handed at all? I don't know if your left eye is as bad or not. Theres also a type of shooting glasses out there that might help ya too.

As for the stove piping. I had the same problem. First thing you could do is give it a REAL good cleaning. That seems to help alot. I also put a new spring kit in and that solved all my problems.

HOpe this helps ya out.

I dont know if this is something you would want to do, but there is a tactical kit for the M1 carbine that moves the optic up over the barrel. the kit replaces the buttstock and handgaurd. There was a post on this site with pictures of it a while back. Maybe try using the sites search engine for M1 Carbine.

Oh yes I forgot about the mount on the barrel. You can get just the mount that goes in place of the hand guard and put a red dot or LER Scope on it. You can get this type at www.fulton-armory.com Its $85 for the mount.

I think the dot sights work well with short range rifles, like the carbine. I put one on using the same type of mount you got from CTD. The threaded wedge that slides into the rear sight dovetail, holding the mount to the reciever, kept working loose so I had to fabricate my own improved version, but now it works fine. This one doesn't magnify, but it makes for fast target acquisition.

WARNING: Surplus rifle purists, avert your eyes.

Ultimak ( http://www.ultimak.com/ ) makes a forward mount for the Carbine. I have a couple on my AK's and they work very well. I'm using red dots, which also work very well, but you can use Scout type scopes or pistol scopes as well.
