Some shopping observations - Page 4

Stopped by walmart and one of the LGSs today. Walmarts ammo shelves were barer than usual, although every time I've been by there even before all the fuss they've been pretty low. LGS still had a wall full of EBRs and the sort, and the counter cases were still full of handguns. The only real sign of the fuss there was the distinct lack of many popular mags and ammo and overall prices only looked to be up 10-20%.

I get the impression that my town has a higher than average number of LGSs though, which may contribute to the mitigated impact.

I'm from ct and i've only been to the lisbon walmart lately, but their stock hasn't changed much. I don't own any handguns, but there was plenty of 22lr ammunition remaining.

. x54R ammo is still plentiful at gun shows and even in some sporting stores.

I went to my LGS (Shoot Straight) Jan 4th to see their stock. Surprisingly they had AR mags in stock, but they were Thermold mags selling for $20. Glad to see they weren't gouging like others who are selling used GI mags for $30+. The only EBR's they had were M&P15-22's, and they had 3 of them for under $500.

Ammo-wise they actually had 223Rem but it was the Hornady HP for $26/box of 20

. At least they still had them and there were plenty.

I've no been to a LGS or walmart recently to see what the stock is like. I've a fair amount of ammo for my 3 beasties, so i'll not be off to a range any time soon.

Should I get the chance to get some ammo though, I'll get a few more rounds of what's available. could always have more...

no 9mm or .223 or .22LR

some .22magnum , some .357magnum.

Local Walmart on a regular shopping trip. NO 22, 9mm, 45 ACP. Birdie killer shotgun rounds, 45LC and some 44 magnums were there.

NY Times chimes in on the sales around the country. Unfortunately there are a few places that the article tosses in bias, beyond what may or may not be selective use quotations from people they interviewed.

I stopped in a LGS I use a lot yesterday and they had a Colt AR15 - $2,850.

I didn't catch the model number, but it didn't look to be anything special - no rails, etc. At another shop there was a stack of Thermold AR mags for $17.99, limit two. I didn't buy any.

Made some trips this morning. By me, 9mm FMJ about 95% wiped out. Can find some defense rounds but not what I prefer (gold dots). 223/556? What's that? About 99% gone. 22LR? No way. 22 short and 22 mag available. Now here is the kicker...40 S&W is getting to be about 80% wiped out for FMJ. Defense rounds are available. 45 ACP is more available than 9 and 40.

See what happens this next week and if the ammo makers can get the inventories up.

Went to a gun show yesterday, AR-15 magazines ran from $20 (GI) to $50 (P-mag). Several AK-mags for $19 to $35. No 9mm ammo, lots of .25, .380. and common rifle calibers. ARs still above $2500, saw a Yugo SKS for $750.

Was in the local Wally World so took a look, they now have a 5 boxes of ammo limit, had some 38 special and some 44 though not much of either and there was someone looking to buy the 38.

Normally I am opposed to ammo limits. I remember in previous shortages the vulture who would hang out at the ammo counter all day waiting for the next shipment so they could then flip it at the gun show or whatever. It was really obnoxious.

Well, the panic is worse where I'm at than I thought. When Obama was elected the first time there was a run on some things, especially certain calibers of ammo. This time even Bass Pro, the most expensive store in my area has nearly bare shelves in the handgun department and a big part of the ammo area. Never seen anything like it.

I wasn't too involves back in '94. Was it anywhere near this bad then? I know hi-cap magazines soared in price, but did everything disappear?

Hit the local hardware-store FFL today and grabbed:

1 case of steel case 7.62x39

1 case of Federal .223

10,000 rounds of .22 long rifle, bulk packed WW.

5000 small pistol primers

500 rounds of white-box 9mm

200 rounds of .30 carbine

All at non-inflated prices, and I didn't even dent their supply.

There are a few oasis spots that have not been hit yet.

some winchester whitebox fmj .40 and 38spl , about $38 per hundred box.

some .45 colt.

only .22 is some CB loads.

plenty of shotgun ammo

no 9mm, .223, .357, 44 magnum, regular 22LR, or 22 magnum

Just back from LGS here, the big box store is still hurting for .223, .308, 9mm and now .45 ACP. Good news is they have fully stocked the shotshell primer shelf. The other small LGS is hurting for pistols, their display cases are getting emptier by the day. They are keeping some S&W revolvers out of sight, trying to sell the other stuff first, the quality is walking out the door.

They did have 5 cases of HBR .223 ammo, at $40 per box, $800 a case. Glad I'm not in need.

Local Wal-Mart had a Bushmaster XM-15A2 again, that lasted less time than it took me to walk from Sporting Goods to the cokes and back again friday morning. Ammo was pretty slim, but plently of turkey loads though.

A Wal-Mart down the road in hazelhurst, which wasn't a super-center, had a fair amount of various ammo, including .380 and .45 ACP, but not rifle calibers other than .30-06 Winchester Supreme.

Managed to get a couple boxes of Federal 9mm at $13.97 each at a WM.
They had 4, 3 box limit. While I was waiting for the asst. manager to open the case another guy came and mentioned the 9mm. I said yeah that is what I am waiting for. Told him I'd take two if he wanted the other two.
He really appreciated it.

Went by a Walmart in Houston, TX today and they had several boxes of 30-30 carbine, .270 winchester and 30-06 (perhaps 30 - 40 boxes each of them).

Other than that very bare, except for tons of shotgun ammo.

No .22 ammo. No rifle ammo. Only handgun ammo was .45 Colt.

Modest selection of shotgun ammo.

Someone on another board said their walmart had converted empty ammo shelfspace to hold other items. But all it would take is one big truckload to fill the empty ammo shelves and sell a bunch.

any day now?
