A good friend was given a Winchester Model 71 in .348 caliber from his dad. He has no experience with lever actions and would like to do a detailed takedown to clean and inspect. Have tried to get info from the Winchester web sight but get no response. Can someone here help? TIA!!

FWIW, I don't recommend trying to take that 71 down. Doing so is not easy and, if it is in nice shape, it has collector interest (top condition ones bring $1000 or more). Taking it apart, buggering screw heads or losing parts will do it no good.

Knowing the 71, I can only say that it is a very rugged rifle, and nothing should need "inspected". Use a good spray cleaner (I use G96 Gun Treatment, but any good spray cleaner will do) to clean and lightly lube the insides, and let it alone. Just MHO.
