Pull 7.62x54r and redo.

I've been considering buying surpluss 7.62x54r and pulling every bullet in the can. I want to see what I can get my 91/30 to do, so I plan on putting it in a new stock, adding an adjustable trigger, and swapping the sights. I dont want to do anything to it thats not reversable. I also figure that since it's nearly impossible to reload cheaper than it is to buy manufactured ammo, I thought I could save money and improve on accuracy if I bought surpluss, pulled the bullets and saved the powder. I dont know if any one would want primed cases sinse the neck would be opened up, but I think I could save money on components by using surpluss ammo, and maybe make the loads more consitant. Any one ever tried this before?

What are you trying to accomplish?

You mention pulling the bullet and saving the powder and not the brass. Are you suggesting reusing the powder? That would not be wise.

It is generally accepted that the bullet in surplus ammo is the weak point and you could accomplish a lot by changing just the bullet, but since you don't know anything about the powder in the surplus ammo, I would suggest replacing it as well. After having done all that, all you are really saving is a primed brass that is berdan primed and can only be used once. Seems like a lot of effort.

you can save the bullet and play with seating depth, save the powder and ensure consistant loads. through away the brass and primer because its junk. I have quite a bit of actual once fired 7.62x54r brass. I wouldnt want to try to work up a new load with the powder, just ensure that what ever the average is, that its right there on it rather than half a grain high or low. Ive seen where people have taken m118lr 7.62 nato rounds and reseated, and made the powder charge more consitant.
