Need advice on purchasing a Shotgun.

Hi, I'm not very familiar with shotguns and am looking into purchasing a Shotgun that will mostly be used for skit shooting and some dove hunting.

I prefer the semi-automatic but wouldn't mind a pump action.

I'd like to get something that has good reliability and is accurate. I'm trying to spend under $700.

Are there any makes and models that are preffered ?

The classic choice is the Remington 1100.

With a synthetic stock and interchangeable choke tubes it's a bargan.

As Geoff said Remington autos are great guns. If you are lazy like me and don't like to clean your shotgun after every shooting session you might consider a Remington 870 pump. Keep in mind with any auto the key to reliability is keeping it clean.

Take a look at the Winchester Super X2 line of guns. Mine have been super reliable.

Thanks guys, My friend also has an 1100 and says he loves it, but Apparently there are alot of Remington 1100's are the one's that wallmart sells any good ?

What's the diference between a Deer barrell and a regular Barrell?

Is the 1100 competition master any good ?

What about Beretta Shotguns how do they compare to Remington Shotguns ?

I don't know of any information that would lead me to believe that Wal-Mart Remingtons are of lesser quality than those purchased elsewhere.
A deer barrel is either rifled for use with slugs only OR has a fixed choke (normally improved cylinder). A regular barrel normally has a screw-in choke.
The Competition Master is great but it is pricey. Compare the price with what Geoff posted about the regular synthetic 1100. IMO they are only worth it if you shoot a LOT of three-gun or combat/action competition.
Beretta are great also and in my experience have been the most reliable of all the gas semi-autos I have tried. They don't fit me well for some reason so I no longer own any Berettas. Also keep in mind that the Beretta design places the gas piston in front of the magazine tube so you can't have an extended magazine like the one on the Competition Master if that is an issue.
As 10/22 said the Winchester SuperX is a great gun and the Browning Gold is also.

The synthetic 1100 is a great deal and perfect for the shooting you want to do. If you are stuck on autos, the Wal-Mart Beretta 390 is also an excellent deal. Remington 870 expresses (pumps) can be had all day long for 250.00, and are also a good buy if you are on a budget. I have one I use for dove hunting, and it is perfect.
