remington difference's ?

I'm in the market for either an 1100 or an 1187,but I don't know what the difference's are.Any help?thanks
actually I'm looking for a 20ga.

The 1187 replaced the 1100 and incorporated design changes to correct some minor shortfallings in the 1100. Both are good autoloaders.

Its more than just cosmetic ....there were a number of internal differences in the 1187 - in the gas system, etc ..alledgedly so the 1187's would fire a wider variety of loads ( heavy, light, etc ) / and the 1187 is an alloy receiver vs steel on the 1100's....

I'm not a big Remington fan ...but I would opt for the 1100 over the 1187 ...

Remington has made so many versions over the years ....someone will be along to tighten up my generalities .... but to my knowledge many of the 1100's were made in 2 3/4" chambers / where I think most of the 1187's were made in 3" chambers.

Actually the 1187 was made more adaptable the new machining and not as labor invested as the 1100. If there were any short-comings on the 1100, it sure escaped me and others.

I am or have been a big fan of Remingtons and agree that both are good shotguns. I too prefer the 1100's. I had a magnum and it ate anythiing I put in it. If you can find a nice used one, you won't regret it. .....

having both i prefer the 1100, IMO is cycles smoother than the 1187 (not that they 1187 doesnt cycle smooth, cause it does). Another you might look at is the Remington spr453 aka remington spartan, russian made, as tuff as the famous AK, and shoots 2-3/4,,, 3,,, and 3-1/2 mags. The spartians are not as pertty as the 1100 but are just as reliable maybe even a little more versitile, cheaper too. but again having all 3, my personal favorite is the 1100

As an R-1100 owner, I can opine, one specific change was a major upgrade: Using stainless for the 11-87's magazine tube. Many's the 1100 put out of operation because poor maintenance allowed the mag tube to corrode and foul the gas works.

Both are still probably the most produced guns on the market in shotguns, they both work flawlessly. I first bought a 20ga 1100 that I love to death, it works great and never let me down. The 11-87 is the same way but isnt quite as nice cosmetically and internally. More of a hunting gun to me. Both are great but for hunting the 11-87 gets the vote for target the 1100 gets the vote.

the finish materials on the 1100 are a cut above the 11/87, polished blue steel and much nicer wood. The 11/87 has a gas compensating systems to fire both heavy and light loads. My 1100 fired both. I'll take the 1100 hands down...

The ones I looked up online look like the cheaper 870.a lower grade of wood and black looking barrels.What ever happened to the nicer looking ones?Will I have to buy an older one to get all the scroll work and nicer looking wood and barrels?than again guys. sj

They are basically the same gun. The older 1100 could be set up at the factory to shoot 2 3/4" shells. Or they could be set up to shoot 3" magnums and heavy 2 3/4" shells. The Magnum versions would not reliable cycle light loads, and th standard versons would not shoot heavy loads.

The 11-87 is the same gun with a different gas system that would work with all shells. They both were offered in varying grades of finish, so you can find both with highly polished blue and walnut and both with matte finishes and plastic stocks.
