Honestly, everyone seems pretty much out. The only place I've seen .22lr ammo recently is at a couple local gun shops and even they are running low. Right now, I'd say your crap outta luck... (And so am I) XD

Went to about 5 different locations and a gun show looking for CCI Minimags. To my surprise, they have disappeared off the face of the earth.

Give it a little while, it will come back. There is none anywhere near me in Oregon. Luckily I'm set for the next decade or more on 22 and reloading components, but I bet within the next 6 months 22 will return. I bet it will cost a few bucks more though. Demand for lead, brass, primers, powder is going to go up, so prices will go up.

What bubbacrabb said. Its still being manufactured, its just disappearing quickly. I'd proffer supplies will start improving in June.

1. Thats after multiple batches of resupply.
2. Some of the freakout will have passed. People will have moved on, and/or regular will have either passed or sputtered and died. Frankly I'm not seeing any serious legislation that would ban .22s.

It will be more expensive initially. Pircing will fall as demand slacks.

I truly don't understand the hoarding of .22LR ammo. I just want to find some plinking ammo to go out and shoot, but thanks to the hoarders who but it and sit on it, there is none to be found here in SC.

We were doing well here in MN until last week. I couldn't find my favorite bulk ammo, but I could find bulk ammo. Only a few boxes of Stinger left @ $5.29/50 now.
I agree with zinc and bubba, it will come back.
I did have a stash of a few thou' rounds before the CT tragedy, and bought a couple more bricks after for a total of about 8K rounds. I don't consider that hoarding.

Guys that have a stockpile of ammo = smarter than the guys who don't.

I was caught short last time on about everything ammo related, not this time. It's not hoarding, it's prudent. No one has any right to get pissy with others cause they didn't get a few 1000 when the getting was good.

I don't understand the mentality that someone who "plans for the future" is a hoarder. Do you wait until you are out of gasoline and on the side of the road before you decide to fill up? Do you wait until a Hurricane is about to hit before you think about extra food, water and gasoline for the generator? Some folks do and some do not. It is time to put on our collective "big boy pants", act like adults, and plan ahead.

Let me correct that for you.

Guys that have a stockpile of ammo = more disposable income than the guys who don't.

Agreed. It makes no sense to bitch about the guy who already had a stockpile laid in before the shortage, because the odds are good that at he time he bought it, his purchases didn't affect availability for you at all.

A year ago, I could have bought a case of CCI Stinger every day, and there still would have been plenty left on the shelf for the guy after me. At that point, who was I hurting by stocking up?

While technically 100% correct we're not talkin life changing amounts of money. Couldn't afford the $100 for 2500 rounds of bulk? Your own fault and technically you shouldn't have time to shoot either.

What if a new law bans ammunition in that caliber?

Then its Guys that have a stockpile of ammo = guys that just lost more money.

I picked up 4k rounds of Gemtech sub-sonic ammo this past friday. I shoot alot of .22lr (sub-sonic especially) and have not been able to find it for the last month. But to be honest I did split it up with a few friends and I left plenty on the shelf so I didnt hoard it for myself, I wanted to, but did not.

It is really ridiculous what has been going on with this run on 22LR ammo. There is no reason to think that something is going to happen to make little 'ol 22 go away forever to never be seen again. Some also worry about some kind of phantom tax that will make it too expensive to afford. Of course this hysteria is doing that very thing, driving up the price and making it unavailable.
All this talk of hoarding vs sensible buying habits got me to thinking about what I am so I went around and did an inventory of my rimfire stashes. It turns out I have around 4700 rounds of 22LR from various manufacturers. I have a habit of buying a brick of Federal when it's on sale and peppering in other brands in various quantities. Is this hoarding? I don't think so and when I was in Walmart a few weeks ago the only stock they had were 100 packs of CCI mini mags. I could have bought all 10 boxes they had on the shelf but I only picked up two to replace some of the few hundred rounds I had just shot off that same day.
It's the dead of winter right now so I don't shoot as much as I will in a few months. I did go to an indoor range a few weeks ago and shot some and I did squeeze off a round in the direction of a red squirrel a short time ago but I thing my stash will last me until the insanity goes away, which it will. I refuse to pay these ridiculous prices and to go chasing around for ammo.

Ah yes, the "bash the 'horder'" thread. I guess I have to chuckle a little when I go to Wal-mart for groceries and just walk by the ammo counter that is doing it's best impersonation of old mother Hubbard's cupboard and think to myself, "Damn, I am glad I laid in a stock of this stuff years ago!" You want to talk about having "disposable income? I've been buying bits and pieces here and there since the days of the Klintonista regieme firing it up as I needed and saving the rest away. Are you telling me that $9.99 for 550 rounds is because I have too much disposable income? Buy a box every month and even though the price is a lot higher these days, you are still not looking at a huge expenditure. Do I really need any more? Not really but when I find it, I buy a box or two to maintain the stock levels I built up over the years.
So, no, I do not consider folks that have saved for a rainy day to be horders. I think of them as having the insight to plan ahead for rough times like this. It's our vindication to those that looked at us like we were crazy for having the stockpiles we did have when times were good. Sorry if you're a Johny-come-lately to this game or if your sense of forsight didn't extend further than 5 minutes past your morning breakfast. The "too expensive" line doesn't wash with me either. Bottom line is you got caught with your pants down and are now having to pay the price for it. That's not bashing anyone, that's just the facts.

Thank you

thank you for the information boys! I myself don't "hoard" but I got a little bit of .22 lieing around (between 1500-2500, i don't have time to count). Unfortunately I don't have much 30-06 (I have a total of 6 rounds.... yes I said six). This really stinks because it is prime hog hunting season here in Texas. Its to cold for the rattlesnakes to be out, and its perfect temp to be out hunting and I don't have even the slightest bit of ammo for hunting. what would you guys suggest? I have a .243 (its not the most accurate gun and to be honest I have little experience with it so I am unsure of its capabilities. I also have a 30-30 but my prime hunting grounds for hog is a large forest (200+ acres of forest). I sit at the edge of the brush in a spot I have set up that is overlooking a open field of approximately 600 yards and 30-30 isn't great for that range. I also have a 7mm Rem mag but the ammo was crazy priced before the CT tragedy, I don't even want to know what a box of it cost now. should I try to use .22?

I don't have any problem with guys that buy in bulk as a matter of course and then stick it in their closet, whether they use it or not since that's their business, but there's another side to that coin where guys just buy what they use and are good with that.

In that case it can sure be annoying when you go to buy your usual 500 count box of plinking material but can't because there's a whole herd of people in front of you going "OMG! OMG! OMG!", and buying everything in sight because some media sub-tard uttered a sentence that had the word ban in it somewhere.

These aren't the same people as guys who tend to buy in bulk just to have it on hand.

With that said, I've enough in my closet to keep me happy for a while.

I must take exception to this. It is not the hoarders, it is the panic buyers, two very different things in my opinion. I would probably be classified as a hoarder by most, but have not bought a single round of ammunition since the craziness started. Why ? Because I have plenty! If anything, it is the people who are NOT hoarders who are causing the problem, the hoarders are prepared.

Do I reload?

At this point in time I do not reload. I do ALOT of hunting and the occasional plink fest (I try to go out at least once a month and shoot of 500 or so rounds of .22, and occasionally check my model 700 for zero which is why i only have 6 rounds of '06) I shoot Hornady Superformance GMX and only hornady ammunition out of the 700. I would LOVE to start handloading but at the moment Space is an issue. Also I have never been able to spend the money need to buy reloading equipment, I am soon to be heading off to college so money is tight, I don't have much funds when it comes to firearms/firearm equipment anymore. But I am interested in handloading. what all would I need to start reloading?

i have been buying all kinds of ammo and magazines even if i didn,t have a gun to shoot it in for years and years at gun shows, flea markets and yard sales.if the prices was decent. my latest buy was 2 weeks ago,460 rounds(23 boxes) federal tactical ammo in boxes for 138.00 and thats what the seller wanted (6.00 a box). my feelings are if you late to the game its your fault not mine, remember the old ant and grasshopper fable? eastbank.

Not even a possibility. If you have a stock pile of ammo, you're going to be fine. They wont even be able to get an AWB thru the senate let alone the house. There are plenty of good reasons to have a big stash of 22. Say this entire thing falls apart. Money is not any good, but 22 bullets are pretty good to barter with if you need to kill a squirrel to feed your family. Especially to guys that dont have any.
