7mm rem mag reduced load
i've been having fun reloading my 7mmRM with standard loads and was looking to reduce the load to have my wife try to get into shooting something bigger than a .22. im currently using 58 gr. of imr 4350 with a 139gr hornady bullet with good results. can i use this powder to safely reduce my load by 20%(46.4gr.)?
thanks for any help |

Go with a medium rate powder, like 4895, 4064, or Varget. I'm sure Unclenik can more accurately describe the dangers of low volume slow powder application. Using half volume powder charges may need some filler to ensure proper lighting.

Start her off real easy.
Look at Hodgdon site and Trail Boss for a 140 gr (~1400 to 1700 fps) |

I've had excellent results running min charges of IMR 4064 and IMR 4350 and 120gr Sierra Pro Hunter bullets in 7mm Mag. Also used a LR primer, instead of LRM. I went off of Nosler data.
Varget and R19 didn't do as well with min charges.

I did the same thing for my wife. I'd actually like a bit more zip than the trailboss load - but at the range it works great.
Luck... |

How low do you want to go?
You can safely use small charges of fast pistol powders like Unique or Bullseye to create drastically reduced rifle loads. I recently formed some cases in my 7mm-08 using 9.0gr of Unique and Hornady 100gr HPs. It produced 1420fps in a 15" barrel. Someone like UncleNick will be along shortly to tell you what might work best in your case.

well she's 5' tall and 105 pounds, so the lighter the load, the better. i hate to hear her complain.i do have a ton of unique, but i only have 139 gr hornady bullets right now.does anyone have a starting load with unique?
thanks for all the help |

I wish you luck. I have a 7 mag, its just too big a platform for any woman that's less than about 5'7" to shoot comfortably, regardless of recoil.
So I found my wife a Remington Model 7 in 7mm-08. Its got a stiff recoil but it never affected her shooting. It fits her, and you could use much the same technique to download some rounds for her to get some trigger time in. Just a thought... Of course, I am envious that she gets to carry the 7 pound 18.5" barrelled one-hole-shooting perfect whitetail rifle while I have to lug around a SCUD missile launcher for the annual harvest.

4895 is the stuff you need. On Hodgdon's site they have a whole section about youth and reduced loads. That powder is the only one that can be reduced down to 60% of max with no danger. I saw the load with Trail Boss but I haven't tried Trail Boss in a rifle. It would be a hoot though to have a load for my 7 MM that shot the same velocity as my 45-70.
