H&R model 999
I have a H&R model 999 22 cal. that is starting to miss fire. The hammer hits the shell, there is no firing pin assy.
Would anyone have a idea how I can repair this to correct the problem? Thanks |

What exactly is happening? did the firing pin break off of the hammer? Is something preventing the hammer from travelling fully forward? We must identify the problem first.

Usually will fire a few rounds then miss fire. Looking at the live shell it has a indent in it but not a good deep one, none of the fired ones do either. It does not look like the tip is broke as it is smooth. Maybe just worn?

If you cannot figure out what is wrong by examining it, you will not likely be able to fix it if you knew what was wrong with it. Take it to a gunsmith or else risk making things worse in the attempt to fix it.

Check to make sure that the firing pin has not dented the cylinder.It might have a burr at the chamber rim.

Most of those guns have recessed chambers so that's really not a problem unless it's out of time. The tip of firing pin could be slightly blunted causing force to be spread over larger area. Firing pin indentation on case heads should be sharp and clean. It might be possible to file it down smooth if that's the problem but be careful not to take any off of length. I have taken old guns and peened the pin to make them longer but that's just a temporary fix. It might take a new hammer to really fix it but those are good guns and worth spending a little money on.

Give it a really good cleaning first then a light lube, then see if it still has a problem.

The mainspring on these guns has a plastic "yoke" on the end that tends to deteriorate with time. If you take the grips off, cock the hammer, and put a paperclip through the hole in the end of the mainspring guide, you can then pull the trigger and remove the mainspring. If the plastic is cracked, you have a weakened hammer fall. Replace the mainspring. The complete assembly is available from Numrich (www.e-gunparts.com).
