Winchester 670 question ....

I understand that the 670 is less expensive version of the post-64 model 70 .... are the internal parts (trigger) interchangable? Would an aftermarket trigger (Timney, etc.) for a Model 70 work in this?

I saw a 670 in decent shape at the LGS ..... they want $399 for it (it has a 3x9 Bushnell Banner scope on it) ........ but the trigger was gawdawful heavy......

Intarwebz sez that it is only worth $250 ...... what say you?

I have a 670 in .30-06. Other than the stock and blind mag, it's the same as a model 70.

I don't know what they're going for now, I've had mine for close to 25 years.

BTW, you can adjust the trigger.

Well, this one looked like it was in decent shape, and with a 19"(?) barrel, lo0ked to be the right size for my kids to be able to manage....... at 1/2 the price of Remington Model 7 youth model.

That, and it was in a caliber (.270 WIN) that I already load for.

I'd think if you looked you could find a model 70 in that price range.

My personal opinion is you'd be better off to go with one of the Savage Model 10's with the accu trigger that you can get at Walmart for under $400 with a scope, rather than a used Winchester 670 for $400.

The thing that attracted my attention was the compact size of this gun ...... I was thinking of downloading a 130 bullet to 2700 f/sec ...... My soon to be 9 y.o. son likes full house .357's ...... and has shot my .270 and his elder sister's 30/30 ...... I was thinking that with a year of trigger time with his own .270, he'd be ready to fill his own tag.

It's not a youth model, but it's lightweight, and It may just fit him fine. I think it's worth having him at least hold it. If it doesn't work, I'd look for a used Model 70 in that price range. You should be able to get one of the Model 70 Ranger Youth Models a fair amount cheaper than that.

$399 is too much for a 670. Think of that Bushnell Banner as adding zero value to the deal - it is a very low-dollar scope that has no resale value. I would pay no more than about $275 for a 670 with no scope.

I paid $250 for my 670 a couple of months ago. That was after paying shipping and transfer fees. I'd say $399 is way too high, like mentioned above you can get a new youth model M700 .243 with scope from Wally World for $429 + tax around here.

I think the Winchester push feed action is great, and I bought mine with the hopes of building another .338-06. I was going to build it on a Remington but when this action came along I couldn't pass on the deal especially since I like the M70/670 three position safety. To add a safety of that style to the M700 is around $200.

Like I said I bought mine 20 years ago and I'm thinking I paid $200 for it then. It's been a great shooter but in recent years the recoil has been a bit more than I can take because of shoulder problems but I wouldn't consider any other rifle in my collection for elk. It will get a new recoil pad this year before elk season...
