Want to buy full sized 9mm

Shooters:
I'm thinking my next purchase is going to be a full sized 9mm. One of my shooting buddies has a Beretta 92 fs that he has let me shoot. I liked it a lot. So, for the same money, about $600 should I stay with the Beretta or consider something else? This gun will mostly be for the fun of shooting it with some reasonable degree of accuracy.

The Beretta and the Sig are great pistols, and I've got a long history with Sigs. But I can no longer get to excited about DA/SA pistols.

Boy and I have been shooting Glocks lately. Same trigger pull, time after time. Tweak it with a 3.5 connector and it is down right friendlyl. The tupperware was a turn off when it first came out, but now I'm sold on it. Now worry about scratches or corrosion, super tough.

Glock has a used slice of the US LE market, and the G17 is in use world wide.

I've been in this same situation looking for a gun. For the same price, I'd look into the CZ-75B ($462) or the CZ-75 SP-01 ($578). Those prices are on the cz custom shop website.

Really IMO you buy a glock . I have never owned a glock but have shot them . They are what every body compares there guns to . ( it shoots as good as a Glock ! ) I did own a beretta 92g same as the fs but no safty just the decocker . I loved that gun and shot it well . I put about 2,000 rounds through it and only had 4 or 5 feeding /extraction failers . All were when I was shooting as fast as I could .You would not go wrong buying one . There is really a few out there that would be good . You might want to check out the XD line . It's another good reliable gun . I own the XD9 and have put at least 800 rounds though it with not one problem . The Glock , XD ,Sig , M&P all of these guns are great and reliable .

If I were you I'd try to shoot and or handle as many as you can . That way you will get a good idea of what you like . Im not sure how much you shoot or what you want the gun for . ( target , SD/HD , conceal carry ) . I would talk to more people about what they like and expect out of there guns . They may start throughing things out there you never considered .

For example . The Beretta is to big for conceal carry but great for HD . The one thing I did not like about the Beretta 92 model was the trigger . It had to much creep/travel almost like a two stage trigger . I don't like that in a hand gun .

Or even a different caliber .

So in short ask around shoot around and get what feels right for you .

That isn't what I meant. I just don't consider Glocks to be the standard to which I compare all other guns.

If you like Glocks, fine. I don't care for them, and yes, that's based on personal experience with them.

Sig P226/P229, Beretta 92 & PX4, Glock, M&P, SR9... All very dependable firearms. If you went Sig you would be looking at a used gun. Everything else, (except the 92,) would be less and you'd have money left over for holsters and ammo.

600 bucks will get you a P226 at Academy sports (it's closer to 650).

It is one of the best 9mm's.

You can install SIG's SRT and have a great gun.

I am headed over to the indoor range this morning with an SP01, 97b and a G19.

I bought both CZs at the custom shop here in Mesa and Eric did trigger jobs on both.

I have not shot them in a while. The G19 is stock.

Tomorrow at the outdoor range will be a P229 Elite 9mm and a Dan Wesson PM9 and Valor .45.

All of them shoot really well.

If I was going to carry a larger CCW gun, it would probably be the P229.

I have shot the dickens out of that gun and it just runs and runs. Keep it clean and grease the action.

The 9mm, in a full size handgun is truly a soft shooting piece...the Colt Series 70, 9mm shown below is just that and as accurate as any 9 mm I've ever shot. It's been upgraded in a cpl respects: target trigger, Wilson bushing, and some mild rail tightening. That said, a 32 oz. pistol is better suited, I think, to a larger caliber.

Pistol design, if you include the polymer frame types, has allowed for a lighter gun that still preforms well....one of the FN's, or a Sig 226 would be my choice, or the Glock 19 or 17, LOL, if you don't mind fugly in a pistol. My wife's G-19 has a 1300 round of 100% reliability, but it's a sometimes bedstand gun for her due to its size.

As to the Beretta 92, it's well made, but larger than it needs to be for the round it fires...actually bigger than the 1911 it replaced...but if it fits your hand, and you like it...why not?

Geez dahermit, how could I have forgotten the BHP. You are absolutely correct in your choice...and I'm a 1911 guy. Senility must be sneaking up on me. The BHP was J. Browning's final design and arguably, his best, but might be hard to find in great condition for $600. Good choice, and Best Regards, Rod

There are more full-sized 9mm's out there in every kind of make, flavor, color, material, than any other type of gun made. Whatever floats your boat - CZ75, Sig, S&W, EAA, Beretta, Hi-Power, and a bunch other.

It really helps to know not only caliber, but type of trigger action you prefer, type of material (stainless, blued, plastic, etc.) to narrow the field.

The Beretta 92 is one of the nicest shooting 9mm out there. I've owned it and the PX-4.

The only complaint is that it is the most complex gun that I know of to clean the firing pin and extractor. Every time I see someone shooting one at the range I ask them if they've cleaned the firing pin and extractor and the answer is alway "No". So the good thing is that the Beretta keeps working. The bad thing is that when it stops it will probably have to go to the gunsmith for cleaning.

I bought a American Gunsmithing Institute video that showed me how to completely disassemble and re-assemble the 92. I did it once and decided that I would never do that again. So I sold it through Texas Gun Trader.

My advice is this: for the price of the Beretta you can have the G34. It shoots even better then the Beretta and it is simple to maintain.

What academy? The only Sigs they generally carry are Mosquitos and P250, a quick look at their website shows they are offering a better Sig selection now but no 226 were listed. That's a very good price for a basic 226.

If I was going with any metal frame, it would be a CZ. I have time with a CZ 75BD, and I love the ergonomics and ease of accuracy. The first mag I put through it, I felt like I'd been shooting it for years. It melted into my hand, pointed intuitively, and shot PoA.

Just to get my 2 cents in, I personally don't care for DA/SA guns. I like my trigger pull to be the same for every shot. The first time I shot my father in laws 229 was comical and best, and dangerous at worse. I loaded, racked and decocked. Fired the first shot, no problem, then went to "stage" the trigger for the second shot, and the thing fired. I was still pointed at the target, and followed the Clint Smith mantra of "On target, on trigger...off target, off trigger". But I certainly wasn't ready for the follow-up shot. Of course, training got me used to it, but my preference is for a good double action trigger pull for each and every shot.

Of course, there's nothing wrong with Beretta's and Sigs. Personally, however, I'd take Glock over either of those guns.

Beretta 92 is good.
Others to look consider:
1. Just above $600, STI Spartan V 1911 9mm
2. EAA Witness Match 9mm
3. Walther PPQ, used Sig P226, SA XDm, etc.

Look for adjustable sights so you can have POA = POI.
All steel gives better felt recoil than most polymer pistol.
