Help removing scratches.

While in the process of cleaning an old lever action with some rust spots I got a little too aggressive with a soft brass brush. Under a dirty layer of gun oil and rust I didn't realize a left some very minor scratches on the metal. To the touch you wouldn't know they were there and to even see them you have to have the gun angled in the light just right, but I would like to get rid of it either way. What suggestions would you make to try to buff or polish these brush marks away? I don't want to make the situation any worse than it is. Thanks for the input.

The finish on most guns IS the surface. Stop now, wipe it down with an oily rag, and call it a day.

A Brass brush might leave brass marks and not mar the finish, but it's been done.
