190gr. 357 mag bullet
Hello all,
I was digging around in one of my loading bench drawers and came across about 50 bullets and the mould, numbered 358430. Has anybody on this forum shot bullet? How does it shoot, and what loads do you use? I am looking at loads for it here and may back off one or two grains http://stevespages.com/357p_4_180.html I will be shooting it out of a Ruger BH Bisley w/6.5 inch barrel or a Dan Wesson with an eight to twelve inch barrel. I will just be punching paper with this bullet as it is a round nose. Happy Shooting Scott5 |

Good bullet. I use 3.5 gr. of Unique, Winchester .38 Spl. brass and WLP primer. The load duplicates the old Winchester 200 gr. Police load they once put out.
I never got around to trying it in a ,357 mag. though. FWIW, in wheel weight alloy, bullet weight is right at 200 grains. I sized my to .359" for use in an S&W M60. I had to go to one of my older Lyman manuals to find any data. Probably the three powders I would choose would be Unique, #2400 and maybe IMR-4227. Unique Start: 4.0 gr./690 FPS Max: 5.5 gr./942 FPS #2400 Start: 9.5 gr./877 FPS Max: 11.0 gr./1018 FPS IMR-4227 Start 9.5 gr./792 FPS Max: 12.2 gr./1020 FPS They also show 5.5 gr. of Unique/942 FPS at the accuracy load. You can probably substitute H-4227 with the starting load and work up. Data is from the Lyman 44th Edition loading manual copyright 1967. This means that Unique and #2400 were products of Hercules. Current versions of these powders are now made by Alliant which I believe may be a bit faster burning. MY pet loads for both the .357 mag. and .44 Mag. using #2400 had to be reduced by 1.5 gr. in the .357 and 12.0 gr. in the .44 Mag. The latest Winchester loading handbook shows 12.4 gr. of W-296/1334 FPS at 35,000CUP for a full power load. They state to use as written. For a plinker with that bullet, they show 5.5 gr. W-231/1060FPS at 42,500 CUP. (Sounds a bit too hot to me.) Hope you find this helpful. Paul B.
