Kirbythegunsmith's Comprehensive List: chamber/forcing cone/choke/bore
I have assembled this gathering (Thanks to Dave McC) of over 30 threads that have relevant input from me concerning details that may improve understanding concerning shotgun barrel performance.
All are placed in order from the oldest first, and each has a comment of subject. This listing was drawn up by me to bring all of my relevant material into one gigantic free-for-all that just might either get a reader to be convinced or burst a vessel fighting off the logic. Some slightly off-topic (but entertaining and educational) stuff mixed in places. You should be entertained for quite a while with this peek into the past posts. ps Remember to see the website (see at bottom) for archive articles there. ---------------------------------------------------------- ---------------------------------------------------------- This is about short shells in long chambers, with some details about shot deformity etc to assist understanding. 01/07 http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=246219 04/07 http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=267848 06/07 Note that after my posting about choke errors being disputed, BG posted a series of links to my various postings for reader enlightenment. http://www.shotgunworld.com/bbs/view...?f=57&t=109702 08/07 You'll appreciate the pictures of the forcing cone and choke problem here: http://www.shotgunworld.com/bbs/view...?f=83&t=116733 And here when I mentioned the choke angle issue, Jugchoke came to the conclusion I was on target about chokes being off-target. http://www.shotgunworld.com/bbs/view...?f=61&t=116081 09/07 And here SuperXOne agreed with my take on the choke problem, with only a slight hint of sarcasm-imagine that! http://www.shotgunworld.com/bbs/view...?f=12&t=118827 12/07 http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=320928 A Real Monster knock-down drag-out... 01/08 http://www.trapshooters.com/cfpages/...hreadID=144326 01/08 (This has some interesting graphics I put together to explain by pictorial method) No posting would be complete without a knockabout r.e. backboring (47 posts): http://www.shotgunworld.com/bbs/view...p?f=2&t=130741 01/08 Can't neglect the information about the Polychoke cracking and choke damage- could be mitigated by a longer forcing cone: http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=333592 01/08 And short shells in long chambers, redux plus: http://www.shotgunworld.com/bbs/view...p?f=2&t=132995 02/08 And RASTOFF even said somebody might need a pro like me to examine a bad choke tube hole here: http://www.shotgunworld.com/bbs/view...p?f=2&t=135923 03/08 53 posts on 3 pages must be serious! http://www.shotgunworld.com/bbs/view...136731&start=0 04/08 http://www.shotgunworld.com/bbs/view...?f=53&t=141064 05/08 Comedy relief break: see the cracked choke pictures. http://www.shotgunworld.com/bbs/view...?f=57&t=144420 Then see the barrel bulge ring fun-for-all: http://www.shotgunworld.com/bbs/view...?f=53&t=130293 09/08 Some took exception to my treatise on chamber length and safety: http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=390434 That's why I wrote this addendum: http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=391107 01/09 More short shell in 3.5" chamber factorization: http://www.shotgunworld.com/bbs/view...?f=31&t=166175 More Komedy mixed with sparx. Here is where I had to fight the snipers in the bushes- and the treatment was less than kind- but the "opposing force" was around for only those 2 posts jibing me- gone and definitely not missed. http://www.shotgunworld.com/bbs/view...p?f=2&t=166555 06/09 Forcing cone discussions can go in just about any direction. http://shotgunworld.com/bbs/viewtopic.php?f=96&t=184434 07/09 Not a lot from my input, but damascus barrels blowing can be an interesting read. http://www.shotgunworld.com/bbs/view...?f=12&t=186864 08/09 The comprehensive "crooked choke tube discussion, recognition, and lack of common sense to recognize a real issue" (along with a bit of gratifying defense of my posted input). Even EVButler got in an "attaboy". http://www.shotgunworld.com/bbs/view...p?f=2&t=187523 08/09 Who wants to see some barrel dent repair pictures? http://www.shotgunworld.com/bbs/view...?f=12&t=189844 08/09 Not a bunch here, but if we are striving for completeness, ports and forcing cone comments R.E. recoil do fit: http://www.shotgunworld.com/bbs/view...?f=53&t=189608 Bulge commentary 1: 02/10 http://www.shotgunworld.com/bbs/view...f=126&t=209454 And 2: 03/10 http://www.shotgunworld.com/bbs/view...?f=12&t=213475 05/10 Latest iteration (3.5" chambers, 2-3/4" shells) and some admissions that excess chamber length could deform lead pellets when shorter shells were used in longer chambers- who knows, maybe it is possible to change a securely-held opinion. Certain I am that there were differences of opinion, if not intelligence. http://www.shotgunworld.com/bbs/view...p?f=2&t=218698 05/10 More cracked chokes- not cracked jokes. Jugchoke agrees with me again! http://www.shotgunworld.com/bbs/view...p?f=2&t=220693 http://www.trapshooters.com/cfpages/...51&Messages=13 06/10 Still not sure why choke tubes loosen even when heavily tightened? http://www.shotgunworld.com/bbs/view...f=131&t=220700 10/10 Minor input concerning barrel length and pattern influence. http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=548430 01/11 Much more input of barrel length influence in this posting. http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=565534 03/11 Bent barrel correction details, patterns. http://www.trapshooters.com/cfpages/...hreadID=246931 03/11 Choke and bore defects in a two- part posting. http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=583226 Includes comments in this appearance. http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=583225 04/11 More details concerning a choke installation gone awry. http://www.thehighroad.org/showthread.php?t=584989
