Best .308 Bullet for 1,000 Yards
I'm one week away from getting my Remington .308 back from the gunsmith.
He's getting it trued up, so it should be a real good shooting rifle. What brand and type of bullet have you guys had good results with at 1,000 yards? Boat tail? Sierra? 168 Gr.? Thanks............... |

I normally load the 175 gr Sierra MK but am trying out the 175 gr Berger to see if it offers any improvement.
All Palma shooters and some LR and F-class load the 155 gr Sierra or Scenar, partly because that is the maximum weight allowed in Palma competition and partly because the bullets have high ballistic coefficients and are still light enough to give high velocity. Ususal loads are at the utter maximum for .308. The 168 gr bullets are not usually adequate for 1000 yards. I have seen one guy doing well with them, but I have seen others not. Some ranges won't even allow them to be shot at 1000 yards because unless loaded very hot, they go subsonic about 900 yards, lose stability, and are considered hazardous. A few people use heavy bullets like 190 gr SMK or Berger. They seem popular in Australia. I am a casual occasional recreational Long Range shooter. There is a lot of good information at http://www.long-range.com/forums/ |

I'd go with the 175 or the 190. You won't be able to push a 155gr fast enough to get comparable wind drift unless you've got 28-30" of barrel.

1000 yards
http://www.benchrest.com/forums/foru...aysprune=&f=12 you might look here for opinions--I'm not sure how a .308 Q is going to be greeted though.

I don't really get into competive shooting any longer, but from a general point of view, Sierra bullets have always shot very well in most every gun I have. Nice prices too.

Glennster,
As Jim Watson said. The 175 grn SMK is probably your best bullet to start with. It has a large following in the LR world. If you had your action "blue printed" but the chamber is still Rem. factory it will most likely have a fairly long leade (throat). The Sierra MK handles a jump quite well, if not prefers it. The Lapua and Berger seem to prefer loading near or at the lands. Good shooting, LP |
