Powder charge hornady 240 .44mag hp/xtp

Requesting help in reloading the hornady .240 gn hp/xtp for a S&W model 29 .44 magnum revolver. I also would like some information on a starting load for a hornady 300 gn hp/xtp for a Ruger Redhawk 5 1/2 bl .45 long colt revolver.

I'd suggest 23.0 grains H110 paired with a 240 grain XTP and CCI magnum primers. That's a starting load, do not reduce further. Max is 24.0 grains.
It shoots like a dream in my PC 629 trail boss. It's ported, but I swear a .38 has more recoil.
I know the same load in a lighter gun would kick like a mule.

It really depends upon which load manual you are taking data from.

The example that caz223 gave (23gr - 24gr of H110) is taken from Hodgdon powder, as it relates to a 240gr NOS JHP.

Using Hornaday's current manual (6th ed) with a 240gr XTP and H110 will yield a range of 23.6gr min load to 25.9gr max load.

A prior Hornaday manual (4th ed) lists 20.7gr to 24.8gr.

Going by Nosler, you get 22.8gr to 23.8gr.

According to Sierra, their 240gr. JHC would use 21.1gr. to 24.2gr. of H110.

When you see results such as the above, you begin to realise how important it is to have several handloading manuals available for cross reference. Note: Most manuals I have specify a magnum primer when using H110.

It has been my experience that staying between 22gr to 25gr is safe in most modern Rugers. But that doesn't mean it is safe in yours! Each handgun is different. Period.

Having said this, my personal favorite full house load, is a 240gr. Hornaday XTP over 24.5gr of H110 using a Winchester WLP primer. This, in my Vaquero with a 5.25in barrel. As always, YMMV.

I have those manuals, and applied the common sense patch and gave him the starting load that makes the most sense.
I happen to know it shoots fine in my guns, and would expect it to function safely in any gun chambered in .44 magnum.
If you stay between 23.0 and 24.0 you should have no problems. Not attacking anyone here for using other data, just trying to give the most sensible data.
The hornady and hodgdon books seem to be the most relevant in this case. No idea what's up with the newest hornady book, but it has lots of data the others don't have, so I keep it around.

Reloading using the hornady .44 mag

Thanks for all the advice on reloading the .44 mag hornady. I'm still looking for information on reloading a 300 gn .45 LC hornady xtp/hp. I will be shooting same out of a Ruger Redhawk 5 1/2 bl.

24.0gr of H110 with 240gr HP-XTP and 20.0gr of H110 and 300gr HP-XTP have been my standard load for my SRH for many years.
