870P forend problem

Does anyone know if this is a split or is this the way the forend on the 870P is made?

The wood is thin in that area and if the retaining nut is over tightened the wood can split from the shock of operating the gun.

All of my 870's with wood stocks are the same. The synthetic stocks are not. It may be different on older guns, but my Wingmasters from the 1980's are just like yours.

I have a new, never installed 870 Police forearm and it has the same cut.

It isn't a split.......it was cut like that.

That's a crack or split and from the card board ring I see on the weapon, that shotgun is new in the box. I have an 870 youth 20 gauge and it does not have that. I have an 870 Express 12 gauge that came with wood furniture that does not have that either. I hate it happened to you but I cannot say it surprises me.

Sounds like a run of bad wooden forearms for some 870 P's.

If that was an intentional cut, then either the operator is incompetent or they are using hatchets to make the split.

Looking at the photos, and my guns, it appears that the split was not cut. Also several posters have noted that their guns have no such split. I'm guessing that the forend is designed to fit very tight, and some split after the being installed and others do not. I have two Wingmasters made during the 1980's with the same split. I can assure you it does not hurt anything at all. Mine are nearly 30 years old and have never given me a moments trouble.

I just dug another one out of the closet and guess what??? I has the same CUT along the length as my other new, uninstalled 870P forearm.

While there may be forearms on other 870 models with or without cracks or splits it seems pretty obvious that this is not a crack but an intentional cut.

All wooden 870 fore-ends have this cut down the middle. It is an expansion joint, it allows the wood to swell and contract around the fore-end tube without cracking or splitting. Synthetic fore-ends do not have this "split" because swelling and contracting is not an issue.
