457 Mag -- Need Info

'Rifle Magazine' has a special issue called 'The Legacy of Lever Guns.' There's a sidebar article called 'Wild West Guns' about Jim West, gunsmith, and his work on Marlin 1895 45-70 rifles. One of his options is to rechamber your rifle to .457 Magnum. The article gives the balistics of a 350 grain jacketed bullet at 2200 fps from a 19 1/2 inch barrel, and that the case is 0.150 inches longer than the 45-70. No other data available. I have Mr. West's info packet, but there's no additional insight into the wildcat. Anyone up on this?

The question is, why is it better than a warm .45-70 load? 410s@2000fps=same ballistics. The stock Marlin Guide Gun has become the biggest selling big bore with very little fanfare, word of mouth gets around. If you don't reload check out Corbon and Buffalo Big Bore for the BIG .45-70 loads..

Wild West use Marlin's for their rifle conversions. The Maximum pressure that these guns can handle is 40000 CUP. WW has not done any enhancements to the guns in the area of added pressure. There is no noticeable improvement in the 458 compared to 45-70.

Very trick rifle though!

45-70 is a complex cartridge with many load combinations. The comparison that Wild West is using for the 45-70 is a "Level 1" load, 17500 psi load data. Like I said before, 45-70 can be safely loaded to 40000 psi in a Marlin. All things being equal, all those cartridges listed are about the same.
