10mm Load - could i be going nuclear?

Shooting from a S&W 1086.

I'm working up some loads for this gun. Powder is AA #7, Federal primers, 180gr Magtec FMJ/TC & Seirra 180gr HP Game masters.

I started with 9.5 grains and worked up to 11.0 grains. No pressure signs except that may brass is traveling pretty far. I have ordered a 22lb spring from Wolf for that. But i was wondering if anybody has worked loads up to 11 grains using AA #7. My manual calls for a max of 10.7 grains.

Am i safe at 11.0 of AA #7? Or am i reaching 'nuclear' loads for my 10?

1086 ...niiiiice!

I have a 1006. Yours is much more rare!

The latest guide I have from Accurate (edition 3.2.2) gives three different pieces of data that might be relevant here.

They list a 180gr Hornady XTP (JHP) with a max of 10.7 grains
Also, a Ranier 180gr plated HP, with a max of 11.0 grains
And they also list a 190gr Sierra FPJ (full profile jacket, according to the guide) with a max of 11.2 grains

I'm not familiar with the term "full profile jacket" but I'm thinking, FMJ or jacketed TC?

Given that data from Accurate, I would say that your loads are stiff, hot, full, or whatever you'd like to call them... but I would also call them safely within spec, likely max loads.

I wouldn't call them nuclear. But I would say to keep an eye on your brass, don't substitute a new primer, watch seating depth and beware of case mouth tension and bullet setback. The stuff we do anyway!

And FWIW, I also upgraded to a 22-lb spring from Wolf for my 1006 and I've been happy with the results.

Sorry I can't help with load data that I actually use, but I haven't done 180 gr jacketed in more than a dozen years. I have had good luck with cast lead in 175 and 200 grains, and 150 gr Nosler JHP's. (but I've been shooting those Noslers out my G29)

I've also had good luck with Alliant Power Pistol and Blue Dot along with AA#7.

Hornady 7th edition list the following for 10 mm with Hornady’s 180 GR bullets.
AA No. 7
Min: 9.3 gr @ 950 fps
9.8 gr @ 1000
10.4 gr @ 1050
10.9 gr @ 1100
11.4 gr @ 1150
MAX: 12.0 gr @ 1200 fps
These were shot out of a Colt Delta Elite 5 inch barrel.

yes, nice it is! I just picked it up 2 months ago. Found it in a little gun shop. They were asking 500 for it. Got it OTD for 500 with a box of Winchester STHP, three mags, and a holster. I swear the this was rarely shot at all. The thing is in beautiful condition, and shoots like a charm!

Well, I'm glad to see that I'm still withing specs for my loads. I'm gonna keep them at 11 grains and go have some fun...

Don't be fooled by the "AR15" name... this is the best 10 site on the 'net, these guys simply merged forums a few months ago for the purpose of server space and bandwidth. The 10mm forum has it's own area, and the area I linked is specifically for the out of production 10mm pistols, where the S&W reigns supreme.

You got a very good deal on your 1086. That's probably a thousand dollars on GunBroker. Maybe more in the current political climate. The box of ammo, 3 mags and holster sweetens the deal nicely. Magazines are tough but not completely scarce, typically run about $40-$50 when you find them.
