I think I'm done with Semi-auto pistols,,,

I think I'm done with Semi-auto pistols,,,
Not that I don't like them or think they are bad guns,,,
It's because I believe I have all of my desires filled in that category.

I have a fantastic Wonder-9 in a CZ-75B along with it's Kadet counterpart,,,
Since in my not-so-humble-opinion it is the epitome of it's class,,,
I see no need to buy anything else of it's kind.

I have a pair of stainless 5.5" Ruger slab-side 22/45 Mk-III pistols,,,
These are the guns for when I take a friend out plinking,,,
I've never fired a rimfire semi I liked better than these,,,
So I see no need to duplicate their functionality.

I did go crazy one summer and put together a set of Beretta NEOS guns,,,
I have one 6" model with an inexpensive holographic optic,,,
Then a second 4" model with an identical optic,,,
Then a third mounted on the Carbine kit,,,
That one has a decent red dot optic.

I don't shoot them at all on solo trips to the range,,,
But when I take a few young newbies plinking,,,
This a fun set to have for them to shoot.

I have a pair of nickel Bersa Thunder pistols in .380 and .22 LR,,,
I bought them because they were pretty and inexpensive,,,
They are the knock-around pistols I let newbies use,,,
They function well and serve that niche purpose.

I have a pair of Taurus "mouse-gun" pistols,,,
They are the 25-PLY and the 22-PLY,,,
What can I say, they are so cute,,,
And a real blast to shoot.

I have a pair of Beretta Cheetah's that I absolutely love,,,
One is a Model 85BB in .380 and the other is a Model 87 in .22 LR,,,
I purchased these guns because I love everything about their functionality,,,
They fit in my hand as if Mr. Beretta made a mold of my hands and I shoot them well.

The Model 85 has become my everyday carry gun,,,
It lives permanently in the concealed holster of my messenger bag,,,
The Model 87 lives in a nice padded hard-case I keep in the trunk of my car,,,
I also carry 100 rounds of FMJ .380 and 500 rounds of Mini-Mags for after work range trips.

I picked and chose carefully over the last few years,,,
I surf all of the gun auctions quite regularly,,,
I just don't see any that catch my eye.

There is still space for more revolvers in my cabinet though,,,
My wish list for those handguns is approaching two typed pages,,,
I'm currently bidding on a Hawes, J. P. Sauer & Sons western .22 shooter,,,
I already have the same revolver but in .357 Magnum so this would make a great boxed pair.

I've got about 4 1/2 years until I retire,,,
I can envision many more wheel guns coming my way,,,
But as far as semi-autos go I think I've filled my needs very nicely.

Aarond

You are not complete!
I see 22 rimfires, 380's. and a 9MM. Where is the 45ACP, 40S&W, and 10MM?. Not to mention 32ACP, 9X18 Makarov, and 7.62X25 Tokarev!

No semi-auto collection is complete without a 1911.

No 1911? No Browning Hi Power? Not Luger? No tactical plastic? No Sig P series? No 45 ACP?

You have some nice guns but the collection seems incomplete to my eyes...

Nothing wrong with more wheel guns but lets not get crazy.... LOL

I feel the same way, funny thing is I haven't had any of the guns you mentioned.

I've had Beretta PX-4 full size and compact in 9mm. I've had the 92FS, a Sig P226, an HK USP, Dan Wesson 44mag revolver, Para 1911 in .45 and 9mm, and a few others. For one reason or another they did not seem like keepers so I traded them away.

My current collection consists of 6 Glocks, and 3 1911s. I like them all and my children will probably inherit them. My only planned acquisitions are a Kel-Tec PMR30 and Glock 35. Then I'll be done buying. I'm 58 so I think I have at least another 20 years of playing with my toys.

Now long range rifle shooting... that's serious stuff.

Personally I agree with with Joe. A 1911 should be on the must have list but I also believe a Beretta 92 should also be on that list. However seeing as you already have a 9mm maybe a Beretta 96 in .40 should be its substitute. I like wheel guns I really do I just don't think any collection is complete without our great military offerings.

Always a well-thought out collection, Aarond, but I have to join the choir and say get a 1911 in there. Something that's not ritzy but solid, like a RIA or Ruger.

Love the choice of the 85 in a messenger bag. What a grand, elegant little firearm the Cheetah is.

Aarond, I offer you a challenge.

Get your hands on an affordable Colt Woodsman or variant. These are out of production, but were made from around 1915 to 1977. Obviously, they can be quite "collectible" which makes some of them expensive and valuable. But the good news is that they made so many that the "collectible" ones must be in a very high grade, which leaves a LOT of them out there in somewhat lesser condition, mostly exterior wear. And these guns are priced to own. To simply get an idea of how many of them are on the market, and to look at the wide range of prices, search Gunbroker.

Believe me, I'm with you on revolvers... I've been on (what seems like) a very long & strong revolver kick for the past many months and I've enjoyed every minute of the wave I've been riding... it seems like revolvers are the only thing I'm looking for and by far, what I am shooting most often.

But the Colt Woodsman is like nothing else. I suspect that simply drawing the slide back on one of these in decent working condition will raise an eyebrow for you. It seems to me that when someone first used the term "butter" with regards to a handgun's operating feel, they must have been holding a Woodsman.

That's my challenge. Put your hands around a Woodsman or variant, feel that slide and how it moves atop the frame and if possible, dry fire it a single time and introduce yourself to one of the finest handguns ever created.

If you do that, I don't see how you can be done gathering semi-auto pistols before you've added a decent running Woodsman to your cache. I'll admit up front that Colt never made anything that looked or acted like a Woodsman in any larger chambering, so your interesting collection of paired "smaller & bigger" matchups won't be in play here, but I'd sure like to hear what you think once you've handled one, or a few. And if you shoot one, well, the deal will be sealed.

I did own one 1911 for many years,,,

I did own one 1911 for many years,,,
It was an Ithaca that my Pops brother carried,,,
Acey (his real name) carried it in the WW-II and Korea wars.

In WW-II he was an enlisted man and made two beach landings in the Pacific,,,
Between WW-II and Korea he earned a commission and became a pilot,,,
According to his daughter he flew artillery observation missions.

By the time I got it (I was 16) the gun was in very bad shape,,,
It had bounced around under the driver's seat of another uncles truck for years.

But as ragged as it looked the dang thing always fired properly,,,
I honestly do not remember it ever jamming on me,,,
And as a kid I shot a lot of mil surp ammo.

After Korea he was an MP Officer and had the pistol chrome or nickel plated,,,
Most of that plating had worn off so I had the rest bead blasted,,,
This was in preparation of me wanting to have it refinished,,,
Then I ran out of money and never had it done.

Just recently I discovered that Acey had a daughter in her late 60's,,,
It was a surprise to my Pop as he never knew he had a niece,,,
Long story short I contacted her and she did want the gun,,,
So I transferred it to her and she was happy to get it,,,
Apparently she had very few mementos of her dad.

In a way I kind of miss that old Ithaca,,,
But to tell the truth I was never all that enamored with it,,,
I know I'll get flamed for this but I never developed a love for SA semi-autos.

So while there may be a .45 caliber gap in my semi collection,,,
At least it's an informed decision and not ignorance.

After I wrote this post yesterday,,,
I remembered there is one semi I still want,,,
That's the Colt target .22 you see every now and then,,,
I have an alloy framed Colt Frontier Scout I would like to pair it with.

I enjoy making "sets" of guns and I think these two would go nicely together,,,
Like a juxtaposition of old and modern in a nice wooden case,,,
But it's not a high priority so it will happen or not,,,
If I see one for a good price I'll snap it up.

Aarond

Okay, okay,,, I did forget about wanting that one.

I never meant to imply I was through buying guns,,,
I was saying that I'll be buying revolvers from now on out.

As I type I'm monitoring a Gunbroker auction for a .22 revolver,,,
I have the same make and model in .357 magnum,,,
This will make another nice boxed pair.

Also I'm not intending to rag on semi-auto pistols in any way,,,
I've simply found out that I have more of an affinity towards wheel guns.

and even if you are done with semi-autos...../ did you ever invest in some good reloading equipment ( like a Dillon 650 press ???).....

that would be a good investment - and fun - for you ....

I had decided I was through buying any pistol unless it was one of the few that I am still looking for, like a S&W mdl 58, or a 6"mdl 28, but I walked into my local gun shop, bought some primers, and also walked out with a Ruger LCP. Did'nt need it, but just decided it would be nice to have a pistol to just drop into my pocket.

Just when you think you're out, they drag you back in!

there's always something to catch our eyes,,,

I won that Gunbroker auction I mentioned,,,
So yesterday after work I popped into The Evil Pawn Shop,,,
I needed that copy of his FFL to send to the seller of the .22 revolver.

As I was waiting for him to print one off for me,,,
I saw a short barrel heritage revolver with pink birds-head grips.

Now this isn't something I would ever buy for myself,,,
But I have started taking another young lady plinking at the range,,,
She will graduate in December and this with a nice belt/holster would be a great gift.

This proves I'll never be finished buying handguns,,,
But I'm fairly confident that I'll not be looking for another semi for me.

Unless I see one I think I can flip for a decent profit,,,
Then all bets are off.

Aarond

Make sure you didn't miss my post above about the Colt Woodsman. (it looks as though we were entering posts at the same time)

I think if you get one in your hands and you feel that slide move across the frame, your interest will be piqued.

That seems to be the direction I'm headed as well. Quick perusal shows seven DA revolvers, three SA and only three semis.

I have been more drawn to wheel guns lately, though I need more DA practice as I am a much better shot with the semis and single actions. I was working on that before we moved, and I haven't had much time or money to shoot of late. Have been trying to make up for that with some dry fire practice, but not regularly enough.

I feel like I have my bases covered. I have a Ruger MK III (plinky plinky), Glock 19 (carry and nightstand) and Colt's Government (to pair with my Garand and really just because). When I get more situated and find a job where I can actually make some extra money, I might continue to waffle on a BHP, though...

In the meantime, I need to hit the reloading press and finagle an afternoon at the wife's family's property for some skill building and ballistic therapy.
