P64,Pistol is not 50 years old, but got them.

I thought the firearm has to be 50 years old in order to qualify for C&R? I have a C&R license and ordered 2 P64, got them, but on the pistols it says 1974?

Doesn't have to be 50 years old.Unusual,seldom seen,unique,or anything classified by the A.T.F. as a curio or relic.That's why P1 Walther's are allowable on a C.R.

Relic = >50 years old
Curio = Whatever ATF agrees to list because it's weird, uses weird ammo, or has some other feature making it collectable as a curio. Tends to be military handguns and rifles mostly.

Firearms Curios or Relics List
A regulation implementing Federal firearms laws, 27 CFR Section 478.11, defines C&R firearms as those which are of special interest to collectors by reason of some quality other than is associated with firearms intended for sporting use or as offensive or defensive weapons.

To be recognized as C&R items, 478.11 specifies that firearms must fall within one of the following categories:

Firearms which were manufactured at least 50 years prior to the current date, but not including replicas of such firearms;
Firearms which are certified by the curator of a municipal, State, or Federal museum which exhibits firearms to be curios or relics of museum interest; and
Any other firearms which derive a substantial part of their monetary value from the fact that they are novel, rare, bizarre, or because of their association with some historical figure, period, or event.

If I was a betting man, I would say the credit probably belongs to a Mr Les Jensen, the curator of the West Point Museum, and this:

There is a PDF floating around of a letter from ATF stating the CZ82 is a C&R based on a letter from him. If he thought the CZ82 was of museum interest, I bet he would say the same thing about the P64

Surprisiingly, the CZ75 never made it to the C&R list. At one time, that was a VERY rare bird.

Wow!! my Walther P1 was made in 1962 And I thought that was a rather new gun.It's fifty years old!!! (just shows how old I am lol !!)
