Anyone Have RL-17 recipies for 22-250

Does anyone have load recipies for Reloader 17 in the 22-250 using bullets similar to the 52gr hornady A-Max or 55gr Nosler Ballistic tip.

I can find absolutely no data in any of my guides or Aliant's website, but Quickload indicates that it may be a very promising powder for this combination of cartridge/projectile.

Wow 52 views and no reply...sounds like people are at least interested, even if no one has tried it.

Perhaps I will have to be the first to post data...in about 2 weeks when I can get out shooting again.

Well, it IS interesting but most liely not many people have tried it. My initial thought would be that it is too slow for the light bullets we use in 22-250. I just kind of figured that RL-15 or Varget is about as slow as I wanted to go.

I hope you try it and let us know how it works. I have some RL-17 that isn't being used for anything. I had high hopes that it would work for my .270 WSM but it just doesn't do well there. It's too fast for my magnums but too slow for my .308 or 22-250, at least that's what i've been thinking.

That reminds me though that I am becoming increasingly irritated with Alliant's web reloading data. It looks like they are using their data for loads as a marketing tool for their newer spherical powders. Those powders might be fine, but some of us want data for the good ole RL series of extruded powders. When I switch bullets or start on a new caliber, I want data for things like RL-15 or RL-22 or whatever powder I have used before and have on the shelf. It's getting increasingly common to only see load data listed for things like AR Varmint or LR2000 or MR4000 or some such nonsense. I know you can get those powders online, but most of the l ocal stores don't even try to market the new Alliant Spherical powders.

Ditto, + 1 for Doodlebugger45, I think RL17 is a tad slow, I use IMR4895, IMR4064, RL15. All of those powders group well with 52 & 55grn flat base bullets (Sierra) in a newer model 70 Winchester Featherweight with claw extractor. William

Before I do try it, can anyone conclusively tell me if it is safe to slightly compress RL-17 ?

I lot of people, Alliant included, tend to mention how RL-17 has a similar burn rate to H4350 and in some of the limited reloading that I have done previously I did find that it gave similar results.
But in this case, QuickLoad is predicting a much faster burn for RL-17 ... whereas it indicates only moderate velocities with H4350, due to lack of space in the case, it indicates top notch velocities with RL-17 at 98-100% case fill (with bullet seated) and with a slightly compressed 102% charge the pressure is still well in the safe zone and velocity is staggering.

Slighty compressed is optimal because it takes powder position out of the equation. But my experience with QL has shown that it errs on the side of smaller case capacities in its equations therefore erring on the side of safety for the user because they in most likelyhood have a larger chamber which will result in lower pressures.

In other words, it probably wont be compressed when you dump it in one of your shells.

I hope you have good luck with it, but I would say it is too slow for the varminter.

Unless you have a super long barrel? Then it could possibly be great.

Don't own a 22-250 so cann't help. I shoot alittle R-17 been a good powder in couple WSM that I shoot (270/300) been a real good powder in my 280AI.

I did try it in the 30-06,280 was alittle slow with the loads I tried and in all honesty I didn't try more than couple bullets.

I had the 280AI long throated so my load density is pretty good.
