TFL Braintrust question: Sig 938 or Springfield XDs 9

I'm looking to switch up my carry a little bit. I've come to the conclusion that I just don't need to carry around a 21 round super fire breathing 7 pound chunk of weaponry. ( I exaggerate of course. )

I'm trying to narrow my choices, and I'm recently considering the XDs 9 (heavily favored) and the Sig 938.

I will be carrying OWB, and for those that my wonder, yes, I've got a pretty good carry belt, and I do occasionally carry my SP101 in a Simply Rugged holster with no issues.

So, of the two, which do you guys prefer?

Oh man. Asking this on TFL? That's easy:

BUY BOTH!

Both are excellent guns, similar in size, but different manual of arms. I think that one has to come down to personal preference.

If money is no object, I would do for the Sig. If you're leaning towards the XDS, I would personally go M&P Shield - only because I prefer the ergos. The XDS still felt larger to me. Not sure what it was.

I don't think you can make a wrong decision between your 2 options though.

FWIW, I literally just looked at these yesterday. After doing so I put a P938 on hold. I typically never buy guns this small, but something about the P938 just appeals to me. The XDS seemed nice, but the trigger wasn't great by any stretch and the P938 trigger was much better than I anticipated. The P938 I looked at had the rubber grip. It might be worth comparing that to the typical flatter grips if you can. With the rubber grips and pinky extension it felt surprisingly good in my hand for such a small gun. Either would serve you well I think.

My 938 is a neat shooting gun, never had a hic-up and really easy recoil. I have the G10 grips and extended mag which helps a lot.

The P938 is as good as it gets for a small handgun.

The P938 is excellent, I have one. My past experience with a Springfield XD9 and now an XDs .45 have been very positive as well.

Don't think you could go wrong with either.

The 938 has a reassembly design issue wherein you can get the extractor out of position and require a detail strip to fix.

The xds 45 I had was not reliable even after a trip back to springfield.

Ergo, neither.

The Walther PPS is perfectly reliable (at least the two 9mms and 2 .40's I own are) and is stone simple to disassemble and reassemble.

I have had my 938 apart numerous times and the extractor just sat in it's recess in the slide with a pin holding it in place. This is the same design used by firearms makers for close to 100 years and in no way could malfunction and cause you to detail strip the pistol. If you mean EJECTOR simply pushing it down on reassembly takes care of it. The 938 and 238 are basically the same design and have been produced in the multiple thousands so I doubt Sig would allow any serious flaw to continue without correction. I have both of these Sig's and shot many rounds without incident.

First I have ever heard of the design error. Will have to look it up.

I stand corrected, ejector. If you push it too far you have a real project on your hands.

The 238 has the same issue as does the Colt Mustang.

I really like the XDs pistols. I had one in 45 that was great. I have never handled the SIG so I have a bias here.

If it were my money it would be the XDS. Money being the key word, the Sig is just a bit to pricey for me but it sure is good looking.

Tough call I suppose, maybe I'd lean towards the XDs. Did you rule out the Kahr CM9?

I just put a P938 on hold. Was $650. More expensive than an XDS? Yea, but not by milestones. Besides, if we're true to this forums typical guidelines, the fact that the SIG is metal means it should cost more anyway right?

True and then throw in the 1911 style of it and it's priceless.... Nice pistol, plus it is a Sig.

I'd get the P238, the recoil is less snappy.

And to mess with your mind even more-----

Have you noticed that the 4-inch XD(s) is now in the stores?

So you have to ask which XD(s) you want, as your 3rd choice.

I've noticed that. It might be a game changer for me. I was leaning towards the 938, but now I guess I'll just have to wait and see.

Besides, I just learned of the S&W Shield, and I'd like to see that, too.

For a gun that size, my vote is for the Shield, at any price. The shield really does a great job of making a small ccw gun into a true fighting pistol. I would take it over the Sig, the XDS, or the Kimber Solo. They really hit a home run with that gun.
