Shooting a 7.62x51mm NATO 'Battle Rifle' on anything other that semi-auto is a waste of ammunition! That anyone would regard a semi-automatic only rifle as not a weapon of war is a bit of a wierd comment.

Our SLRs were semi-auto only, because the British doctrine was for aimed semi-auto fire; even now with SA80A2 (which is selective fire) the only time one tends to use automatic is either a) close quarters battle, or b) the lead scout in an ambush will empty his magazine to create temporary noise and fire superiority, whilst the remainder of the patrol counterattacks.

I've fired an FN FAL on automatic; the 1st and 2nd rounds tend to be on target, but the remainder are high. It's difficult to control.

In the Falklands we had 5 magazines per rifle and a 150-round bandolier; if you were shooting too rapidly someone would tell you to slow down, because we had to make the rounds count.

Most accurate? AR-10 type system with the HK delayed blowback coming in second.

Forget the M-14. It's a prima donna and must be treated as such. Great gun, but its tempermental.

I think $500 -$1200 for a semi auto .308 is pretty unrealistic in the current climate.

- Fals are $1700 or more. I have not seen the Imbel Fals that were around $900 for quite some time. Yes, I know atlantic has them on their site but they've been sold out for months. I've only been able to find the DSA Fals which start at $1700

-Cheapest DPMS AR I've seen is $1500

- At the very top of your scale you can find some PTR's (atlantic firearms has them) for $1100.

Remember all of those prices are pre tax, pre shipping, and pre transfer fee. I just don't see a .308 under $1k unless its some lemon from Century. Buying firearms online from Century is like playing the slots. You just never know what your going to end up with.

On a positive note atlantic firearms has some nice AK 74's and 47's. Considering some jack wagons are trying to sell WASR 10's for $900, they have a nice selection of higher end AK's (Arsenal, Saiga, Maadi, Krebs Custom, etc.) from $900 and up.

For your price point, look at the fnar, you can add iron sights to the rail, with the rail and ejector configuration, it is easier to scope than the M1A...and scope reliably. Mine shoots sub MOA @ 100 yards and presumably beyond that, but with ammo availability, I have not tried much in the way of longer groupings. Not a light gun, but not bad either.

FNAR is the way to go. Can be had in 16" like mine, 20" and heavy barrel 20". All three variants will shoot sub moa and can be had for about $1200. Only down side is mags are about $50 a piece.

I've owned both the FAL (2 different ones), and the M1A.
I have to give the best credit to the M1A.

Reasons:
Lighter
More accurate

The FAL is still an awesome rifle.

For the price range mentioned, a .308 Garand is what came to mind.
Can't really comment much on them, but that is what I would be looking for in that price range.

Has anyone mentioned the SCAR17S?

Just sold my PTR, but currently have a SIG716 and M1A; the SCAR really is a huge step forward in engineering.
  • Light weight
  • Excellent recoil dissipation
  • Modular
  • From the Land of the Waffles
  • Sponsored by the letter "E"

Hmmm... epic suggestion fail on my part.

$1k is pretty unrealistic for today's climate.

That's why I think his only alternatives for a .308 BR is a VEPR, Saiga .308, or a CETME

Even the cheap FALs are gonna be minimum 1200

$1200 for a FAL?

I got one, years ago of course, for $600...
I think you can score a basic one for under $1K... I could be out of touch though.

I want to add an FAL to the collection eventually, but the ones I see assembled are either Century builds which from what I've read are of questionable quality, or DSArms which is running $1200+ pre panic.

I understand they are easy to build, and have thought about getting a receiver and a parts kit from SARCO, but then you get into the whole 922 discussion.

Wow, I got my paratroooper model FAL, used, for $1525... and would sell it for the same. I've barely used it, to be honest. I love my M1A so much.

For your price point, if you are looking for a dependable, works-every-time, spare-parts-available, well-designed, accurate battle rifle, start looking at either a good bolt-action .308, if you are stuck on the caliber, or a semi-auto .223. You're not going to get a reliable gun with the funds you have, unless you happen to luck into a deal somewhere or prices drop by 70 percent.
