I finally got to shoot it!

I have had my 300 win mag for almost a year now and finally got a scope for it so I cold shoot it.

I loaded up some 165 grain Hornady SST's over some IMR 7828SSC at 67.8 and 68 grains. Both loads shot great, bullet holes touching great.

So my question is, should I just stick with the load, or should I continue to work up to a higher charge?

You don't state the distance you were shooting. If you were 100 yds and they were touching , I'd say leave it be but if you were 20 feet and they were touching I'd say experiment!

What do you plan on shooting with it?

Awww, come on Jim. I know he wants to! I was going to suggest a 180 grainer if he was going to take it hunting for deer or something larger. Depending on the twist his rifle may like it even better than what he has now. But yes, that's an excellent start!

165 gr SST's awesome start and even better when your first load starts off by touching. I got a 30-06 some 8 yrs ago testing for a load then my friend gave me a 165 gr SST he handloaded and it touches too at 100 yrds and that's still what i shoot today. I was experimenting with 165 gr SSTs but not got a load that touched until he gave me some of his. I'm happy and helped me out too. Plus for hunting the SSTs are devastating on game

I couldn't get the SST's to work in my rifle, cranky wench didn't like much of anything else, either. Only bullet it really likes is a 180 Hornady spire point, I prefer the 165 spire point. We're still negotiating.

Since where I hunt is a pretty heavily wooded and 100 yards would be a far shot on average. Targets will be any thing from deer to Moose and elk. Even Yogi is on the menu.

Not being a expert I was thinking I should eventually try the 180 bullets since the 165's are probably going to be a little light for that fast and close. Not sure though, What say you all?

Right thinking. You try the 180 grainers, I'll bring my gun with the 165s and we'll compare them! Lol. Both will be fine. Shot placement would be more critical I'n my opinion

After I gave up on the SST's I read some bad reports about bullet integrity @ high velocity. Your 300 pushes them much harder than my .30-06. I'm a big fan of tough, heavy bullets when Yogi and Bullwinkle are on the menu.

That bullet weight in the 3006 works on bigger game like moose and such. So why would pushing it faster cause problems? Maybe try the Accubond, or the Swift Sirrocco II. Push those bullets at the desired velocity, and don't worry about explosiveness, even against Big critters!

Nothing wrong with the bullet weight, it's my favorite for the caliber. It's just that some rifles and shooters prefer other bullet weights and designs. Only big stuff I get to shoot is hogs and I like Hornady's Interlock in my .30-06. Latest rifle shows a marked preference for the 180 over my old favorite 165, wouldn't be surprised if a .300 would as well. Either will do fine in his hunting situation, I just enjoy getting all the performance I can out of a new rifle and grubbylabs' new rifle is certainly showing some great potential.

Our 3006's like the 150 grn bullets real well, but those are probably light for the 300 win maggy. Kinda like my 7mm rem mag likes the 139 grn BTSP Hornady customs., and now i'm working up some 150 grn load that are really accurate for it.. (just ordered Swift Sirrocco II's in 150 grn) hopefully I keep getting it better and better and..........

It's all about giving your rifle what it wants, wish my rifle liked 150's. I think that would be the perfect bullet for TX whitetail.
Looking forward to a range report on those Swifts. Always heard good stuff about their bullets.

I know what I would do. I'd record that load, and keep playing, I like to reload. I'd try different powders, primers and seating depth. Just because I like to reload! When the hunt comes around, you can sight in with a known good load, the one you saved, and be confident it'll work...

If I get a chance this week I will put them through the chronograph, but right now I am having a hard time wanting to change any thing. Our rifle season is right around the corner and I think my time would be better spent zeroing this load for now. But I think that there are some 180's in the future for this rifle.
