Coyote on 7.62x54?

Is this an ok calibre as far as retained energy at useful range (125-200)? Also, where to shoot the coyote with this round?

Hell yea!
It has very nearly the same energy as the .30-06.
The 7.62x54R is good enough for deer, elk or anything else that the '06 is good for.

prolly not going to see much pelt damage considering common fodder is FMJ.
30 cal hole in 30 cal hole out.

i don't hunt yotes but i imagine
a head shot or shoulder point heart shot
COM on chest

whats your rifle?

Well you got plenty of poop there but I sure wouldn't be hunting anything with FMJs. No, you won't have any pelt damage but you won't have any pelts either. Unless your putting that .308 hole in his brain, clipping his spine, or through his heart, that old coyote ain't hang around and let you skin him. They are tough critters and will travel a long way with a little hole like that in them. Like on any game animal, you gotta use an expanding bullet. It is quite inhumane to do otherwise. Use the FMJs on the range.

Well...my hunting with this calibre is moot now. I decided to not pick up the Mosin. Thanks for the help though guys! Most of it will work in other calibres too. Havea good one!!

can you buy 7.62 54r in a softnose?
or would you have to reload?

since its a russian military round i figured most ammo is surplus FMJ

Hanson and Norma both make soft point ammo for 7.62 x 54 russian. It usually 180 grain stuff. Should give yo a 10 inch drop at 300 yards when zeroed at 200

DZ... Seller & Belliot makes a soft nose 7.62x54r that is brass cased and boxer primed... cost around here is about $7.00 for 20 rounds.... the Norma is about $10.00 per 20 (at least around here)....
