rossi M92 barrel band

The Rossi M92 is an 1892 winchester copy. There is one barrel band at the front grip with a screw that goes thru the front stock and is threaded only on the end to engage the hole in the other side of the band. Probably like a lot of other rifles.

I had the barrel band off to do some finishing on the front stock, and now the dang screw won't go back in. It looks like it's lined up properly with the other side, but the screw just spins and won't engage the threads. I've tried pushing on the screw head side while I turn it, but it doesn't want to go in.

Is there some trick to getting this pin back in??
