3 1/2" Wingmaster??
Is there such a things as a 3 1/2" wingmaster? I have looked and looked and cant find any information on one other than in a "gun values" book that I have. Do they still make these? Did they ever make them? Were they decent guns?
To me it sounds like the ultimate pump gun...... |

Yes, it was sold in the 2000s.
http://www.remington.com/library/his...wingmaster.asp They function just like any other Wingmaster, but they are capable of handling 3 1/2" shells. You can still find them online. Maybe someone on in the forum has one for sale. They run $500+ for a new one (not including tax, shipping, transfer fee, etc.). |

I don't think the "870 Wingmaster" specific model was ever offered in a
3 1/2" chamber - although there were many versions of the 870 that were made in 3 1/2", I'm not confident they ever carried the "Wingmaster" name. The Wingmaster, even today, is available in a 12ga 2 3/4" or 3" chamber - as well as 20, 28ga and .410 ( and I know in the past they offered some 16ga as well ) - and they offer it in "Trap" versions, etc. But I'm not an expert on the Wingmaster model either. |

Balistically today - its easy to make a 12ga - perform like a 16ga ( with 1 oz loads ) or even a 20ga ( with 7/8 oz loads) - and there are a lot of them available commercially.
But since you have a 16ga / the only real way to shoot it affordably is to get into reloading. I have a couple of 16ga's but I just don't shoot them too much / and there are no competitions in 16ga ( just 12, 20, 28ga and .410 )... so the 16ga kind of gets left out these days. |

Don't know if they ever produced many, or any, but there was one in the catalog a few years back. I have never actually seen one. I know Ruger has been known to catalog guns they never made.

Sorry. I realized the link I directed you to in my previous post shows ALL the remington 870s.
The 3 1/2" Wingmaster you're referring to is called 870 Wingmaster Super Magnum. You can try contacting Remington, they might have some left overs. |

Good info, Hank - thanks.
Just from my perspective - I've never had a reason to really need a gun chambered in 3 1/2". There are plenty of ammo choices - even for Ducks and Geese - where you can do just fine with a 3" chamber. Not that everyone shouldn't buy exactly what they want - I'm just saying a gun with a 3" chamber ( for bird hunting or waterfowl ) is plenty. I hunt big game with a rifle - so maybe that's a factor ......but I don't think so. |

No problem.
BigJimp is correct. Many slugs designed for mid sized games are 2 3/4". For example, the Winchester XP3 has a muzzle velocity of 2000fps, and it's only a 2 3/4". Remington also makes specialized game loads in 2 3/4" and 3". If you really want a 3 1/2", but with the Wingmaster look, you can always refinish the gun. In fact, you can buy an Express Super Magnum model, make it look better than a Wingmaster, and be able to shoot 3 1/2" shells. |

Yes they did make them, I have one with a 30 inch rem-choked barrel. Absolute gorgeous gun, a guy I deer hunt with has one with a slug barrel on it as well. When they first came out there were just over $900 here in Canada. I got mine used from a guy who was like 5'5 115 lbs, don't think he liked the recoil of them big shells in it!!

The 870 Express Super Mag, 3.5" chamber, is in the 2009 Remington catalog.

I bought a Remington 870 Super Mag. with a synthetic stock for ducks and geese because it was cheap and I knew wouldn't feel so bad if I accidently dropped it in the river. It is pretty light weight. I don't seem to notice the recoil when shooting at geese wearing several layers of clothes. However, I only patterned it with 3-1/2 shells once wearing a tee shirt. The recoil was something I don't ever want to experience again!
