Un-pimp my scope (too shiny)

I have a glossy black Leupold var-x 2 scope and I'd like it to have a dull finish. I'm thinking of painting it with flat black lacquer, or just working it with some steel wool.

Any advantage of one method over the other, or any other ideas? (buying a new scope is not an option at the moment - besides, I like this scope)

Look for camoflage paint for bows.

It's sold with a remover so that you can take it off later.

For more permanent processes, The DuraCoat from Lauer is a good choice.

Use any flat spray paint made for metal. You'll want to sand it a wee bit first. Or buy a roll of camouflage tape.

Most scope tubes are aluminum, anodized black. If you sand or abrade the coating, you will see aluminum. Tape or paint will be your best bet, and it can be removed if necessary.

This shiny Leopold is coated with something hard, maybe powder coat? 0000 steel wool doesn't knock down the shine at all.

Tape might be the way to go.

The hard finish is anodizing. If you abrade through it, you will have aluminum showing. Steel wool will not affect it unless the thin, hard surface is broken.
Paint the scope or tape it.
