Depends on what you're talking about. Rifle, pistol?
Rifle I measure to the ogive. If measuring rifle to the tip, it can vary from bullet type to bullet type. Pistol, it normally varies by .002 in either shorter or longer than OAL originally set. |

I dont have a comparator, so I let it vary by a few thousandths. I really just get a dummy round set where I want then adjust my die to that each time I set the same type of bullet. I check col on a few to be sure im not way out, but the tips vary, so im only able to ballpark it and trust my die for consistancy....... but really I need to put a comparator higher on my list of priorities

I only load for handguns. So I'm only speaking for handguns, and myself.
In most cases, I'll allow +/- .005. 5 thousandths hardly even makes a visible gap in a micrometer. I'm thinking that's plenty accurate. I've checked factory ammo, btw, and have found much more variance.
