500 yard goal

I want to be able to shoot 1 moa to 500 yards but I do not want to spend a lot of money. So I would like to know what the cheapest route would be.

I was thinking a single shot Rossi or a Ruger American would be about the cheapest any suggestions would be nice.

A Savage in a caliber between 6mm and 7mm inclusive, non magnum. Maybe not the best, but certainly the cheapest route.

RRA National Match rifle should do it. You don't even need a scope.

Their varmint rifles should do it too.

A white oak match rifle or varmint rilfe upper will do it for sure, and you can get that in chamberings that will be more competitive at 500yds.

You'll probably need to make your own ammo to be really happy with it, since off the shelf match grade ammo is spendy.

At 500 yards, your ability to call the wind will make a bigger difference than the inherent accuracy potential of the rifle. My .30-06 600yd loads will drift an extra 1.5 minutes for every 5mph of wind at 500yds. So, if I think that the wind is at 10mph, and it's really at 15mph, then I'm going to miss by around 8 inches, even if my rifle can hold a 5 inch group at that range.

Consider not just calibers between 6mm and 7mm, but also 6mm and 7mm.

So all of the 6mm, 6.5mm and 7mm offerings.

Not just an axis, whatever Savage appeals to you.

1 MOA at 500 yards. ,308,30-06,243,7-08, ect ect. Axis will do it , Trigger job and your on your way.

I built this 6mm Remington from a 98k Mauser when I was 15 (about 50 years ago) and it shoots sub MOA at 300 yds.

The 6mm round is a great long range cartridge.

A Rossi might be a 1 MOA gun...maybe. Mine is not. If the one you get is not, it will be difficult and/or expensive to make it shoot that well. Any bolt action is easier and less expensive to accurize, and more likely to be MOA out of the box.

Rossi is not going to be a cost effective 1 MOA rifle at the range you are talking about. Ruger American has been showing promise from quite a few shooters on here. The Savage Axis is also a very good option.

For a rifle to shoot no worse than 5 inch groups at 500 yards when held by a human, it'll have to shoot under 1/2 inch at 100 yards the same way.

Almost any reasonably accurate gun will do it with 3 shots. Fewer will with 5. Fewer still with 10. Most will not at 20.

Single shot, break action guns can be tricky due to action flex and inconsistent lock up. A bolt would be better. You can get a brand new Savage with a useable Nikon scope for around $400. That'd be the first choice for me.

Sure, but toss the requirement of cheap right out the window! Is 1 MOA really needed? Might you be more comfortable with a 2 MOA $300 single shot, or a 1 MOA repeater for $350. The Axis or Stevens should be able to get you there.

Just about any modern rifle, with the right ammo, is capable of 1 moa. The problem is the shooter.

If 500 is your maximum range then look at a Ruger no.1 in .204. loads of fun.

At 500yards I'd be looking at a bolt rifle instead of a break action single shot. Ruger American would probably be a good choice. One of the Savage or Marlin LS-7's as well as the TC bolt rifles if on a budget.

My pet '06 was reliably just inside one MOA at 100 yards for five shots. I built a 500-yard setup and was happy to see that it was one MOA for five shots there. I then did a rather quick series of ten shots. Two called fliers without even looking and eight in 1.2 MOA. Call it a penalty for hurrying.

IOW, no big deal, seems like.

MarkCO had it earlier. A Savage bolt rifle is the place to start.

I would not count on a break action, external hammer Rossi to make MOA consistently at 500.
