Purchased a Wolf spring from Brownells to replace worn op rod spring in my M1 Garand. The free length of the new spring is 21" & manual states spring should be 19 3/4"- 20 1/4". Should I cut the spring to get it within the spec? The rifle worked well before but the original spring had some severe flat spots in it. Thanks in advance for any info.

Hi, 1tracy,
Why not try it? Make sure the action works freely and is not stopping on spring compression, then shoot the rifle. If things work, it may be OK. Note on recoil springs: Some people think a heavier recoil spring softens the action and prevents gun damage. But a heavier spring also adds to the force as the action returns to battery, and this can damage the gun. In general, it is best to use the type and weight of spring the designer called for. Jim |
