First read everything you can here on TFL in the cast bullets subforum.
Then go here and read some more.http://castboolits.gunloads.com/ As to lead---tire shops for wheel weights is still a good source in most areas. For .40S&W I use straight clip-on wheel weight alloy air-cooled. 180gr TC or 175gr. SWC are both good performers and easy to find load data for. For the record, I get better performance out of my cast than I do with jacketed or factory hands-down.

Clean alloy ready to cast at good prices at http://www.rotometals.com/Bullet-Casting-Alloys-s/5.htm
After gathering wheel weights sorting the zinc out then smelting , it`s probably purty close cost wise even if ya get the WW for free. Being I have the equipment already I still only get WW I can barter for or free & even then 1/3 are zinc

I`m considering if ya have to take time/fuel to establish a new clientel to pick up WW & the equipment/fuel to render em suitable for our casting addiction. If someone want to do it there way ,by all means proceede, for 2 yrs. I had more time than $$ & hit every tire store I could during doctors appointments . I only netted 250# uf useable ingots & the last bucket was more zinc than lead I`m just saying , to make sure our efforts to obtain good alloy results in positive ways.

Take note of that rotometals address. Basically the time is coming when we'll all have to buy casting metal as the various states are outlawing lead WW and they're slowly becoming harder to find. A lot of people are having to buy WW at the tire shops or scrap dealers. There are still a lot of sources such as lead pipe and roof jacks usually from scrap dealers, you just have to learn something about alloying soft lead to get the desired hardness. I would recommend you do a lot of reading over at www.castboolits.gunloads.com, tons of info there. Goat
