Actually, looking at Tailsgunner's pics above, that's even nicer. But Mini's with mismatched "handguards" / two-tone look always turned me on, though I guess this is more "three-tone"

Stuff like this. Man, I'm drooling over this thing. Maybe when I get the heck out of NY...

patriot - you will never win a competition bench match with the Mini but that is not what they were developed for.

The action is where the value is. The same as the M14 only reduced in size for 223.

Cool as all get out shooting it. Dead nuts reliable. The newer series are more accurate than the older ones with the thin barrel.

My vote is yes, go get one.

FWIW - my daughter has won the 4-H off-hand shooting competition for the last 3 years running. This year is her last competition year and a pretty good chance she will win again. Some pretty stiff competition too. Her average score off-hand is 274 out of a possible 300. John King, the instructor, won the 4-H instructor of the year award in 2016. That's a big deal as there are hundreds of instructors in the mix. He has done a super job getting youths interested in the shooting sports. My daughter out-shoots the instructor and I'm pretty sure I will lose bragging rights the next time she challenges me to a match.

I'm a fan.

Especially of this one. This is my 581 series Model 5858 Mini-14.

I love 'em. I have a old 84ish pencil barrel in stainless with a Butler Creek synthetic folding stock and bought a very neglected 10 year old, Mini-30 ranch that was confiscated by the local sheriff, for $300. She cleaned up real nice though.

My 185 series was bone stock until about 2 years ago when I added a Hogue overmold stock and an accustrut.

Later on, I added the Amega rail and a red dot

How do you like that Amega rail? Sweet looking rig.

Looks like the Amega rail allows the Red Dot to sit a bit lower than the GG&G rail I have on my Mini. The more I shoot this rig the more I like it. I especially like it on the bench with the bipod.

Modern Mini-14's just look sleek and compact compared to AR's. A much classier rifle for sure.

So here in Chicago, the Mini-14 is banned by name, but the Mini-30 is perfectly legal (which just about sums up everything you need to know about my world). How does it compare to the 14? Mostly the same, or are there any issues from the caliber difference? Do they use the same accessories, like sights?
