Question for 11-78P owners

Could one of you guys measure the diameter of the barrel gas ports. I need to open up the ports on a modified barrel. TIA!

By the way, if you don't have a numbered drill set to use for measurement, you can use a couple other methods...
Mark the tip of an awl with a dark colored marker, insert the tip into the port, give it a twist and measure at the shinny ring where the awl contacted the side of the port.
Or, you can also use a piece of solder. Slightly flatten a piece of solder about 1/4 of an inch away from the end (so it resembles a garden hose with a bulge in it) and push it into the port until the slight bulge contacts the edge of the port. It should leave an impression on the solder which you can measure with a caliper.

Find a bit that fits the port. Take the next one up that won't fit and use it. Not a scientific method but has worked well for me in the past.

Whoa!!

Are you sure you want to just go drilling your ports?

What problems are you having and why do you think you need to do that?

You do realize that the 11-87 Police has a beefed up action to handle a steady diet of heavy slugs and buck that a department would be using in it. I have seen many people buy them and then complain why they can't shoot cheap shotshells through them. They would have been better served by just getting a regular 11-87 with the regulating gas system so they can shoot all types of loads.

There are ways to make them work other than drilling the gas ports. Why don't you look for more info before drilling your ports?
I am not saying not to but there are other options to drilling that aren't so permanent.

Drilling the ports is not a big deal. Many of the Rem barrels are designed to fire a specific type of load, like 3" only. However, other barrels, that are similar in length, have larger gas ports to accommodate a greater range of ammunition. As long as you don't go too large, its not a problem.
