Which calibers would you stock up on now?

I've put together a list of rifles I want to get and am trying to figure out how hard it is to get ammo. Which of these calibers do you think will be in short supply in the future?
.30-06 for Garand
.30 Carbine
.303 British
6.5x55 Swede
8mm Mauser
7.62x54R

6.5 and 30 carbine are already pretty hard to come by unless you are alright with buying cheap tula ammo for a collectable rifle.

06 prices have remained pretty steady but high but there is absolutely no chance of supply ever running out.

54R is the cheapest and is everywhere b ut it won't stay that way forever. I would start stock it up before it breaks $100 per spam can.

8 mause is starting to get rare as is 303 brit, it's a bit of a trade off, 303 is more plentiful but there seems to be a lot more enfield shooters than mauser shooters(at least in my area anyway)

Thanks. I was under the impression that the M2 ball .30-06 was getting short. The .30 Carbine I'm looking at is Aguila and the 6.5 is Prvi Partizan. I use the former in 9mm for my Glocks, Sig and Sten. Haven't shot the latter.

M2 is pretty short but there is a lot of factory ammo that still cycles fine in garands. PRVI makes a lot of ammo that other companies have either given up on or just do not want to get invested in like 8mm mannlicher or 6.5 carcano. it's pretty tough to get your hands on but to my knowledge most of it is reloadable so it's a good thing to have around when you just want to stockpile brass.

I'm with troopcom. I'd also add .30-06 M2 ball from CMP to the list.

Get as much of each as you can afford. When you think you have enough, buy more of each.

That's my idea, but the other occupant of the house disagrees. Last night though, she decided to read some comments on MSNBC and told me to buy what I want after yesterday. Not going to go crazy, but I'm thinking that 1000 each of .30 Carbine, .30-06 M2 ball, and .303 British plus 500 each 6.5x54 Swede and 8mm Mauser, and 880 7.62x54R will tide me over for a little while. Don't even have rifles for the last three yet and am picking up a SMLE today. I don't burn through long gun ammo very fast - no place to shoot right now. Bought 400 rounds for my Garand in 2000 - have 300 left. Probably should start vacuum packing it.

for centerfire guns 1000 rounds each gun.
For .22's Lots and I mean lots.

That's the minimum

I have .22LR and short coming out of my ears. I think I still have some with Montgomery Ward price stickers on them. Probably should get more .30-30 and .22 Hornet while I have Household 6's permission. Picked up a 1915 SMLE today - my first old gun that didn't come through the family.

At this point, I would suggest you obtain whatever ammo you need ASAP. After what happened in Colorado, I foresee lots of flak coming down the pike regarding purchases of large amounts of ammo of any kind.

Monday can't come soon enough. Got the order ready. Only waiting because I'm kind of on the fence about the 1903A3 that Aim Surplus has. I know they are re-makes, but I'm wanting a shooter more than a safe queen. Spending the weekend looking at prices. If I do pull the trigger on it, I need to see if they will hold onto it until my C&R comes back.

actually to my knowledge their A3s are original, the A4s are repros made from A3 actions and modified bolts.

Oh, ok. Hmm...decisions decisions. To buy the rifle I need to drop 1000 rounds from my order. The ATF just charged my credit card Friday, so it'll be a while before the license comes in. Think they'd hold a rifle if I pay for it?

M2 ball is available. Quality .303 Brit surplus is a rare find, most you see now days is POF and not the most reliable. .30 Carbine is around if you don't mind paying for it. 8mm is around but not at the .10 a round it was just a year ago.

You can always find 03A3's and A4's. I don't think there is going to be a big increase in fire arm prices but I do anticipate a increase in ammo prices. There is going to be a run on all calibers.

all of the above. Pick one or two at most and focus your efforts based on needs. After you have 1000 rounds on hand for each and a reloading set up for each think about the next on the list. 1000 is my benchmark minimum in most cases.

Reloading is a problem for me - no time and no real space. Maybe when I retire I'll have time - should take me that long to burn through 1000 rounds. I'm buying ammo for rifles I don't even have yet. Easier to talk the wife into it with the Colorado thing. Bloomburg and NJ Frank sealed the deal.

you can fit a reloading kit into a box smaller than a case of beer and if you have the gear you can learn to reload when you have the time or if you must. Reloaders will be shooting long after the rest of them are crying over there empty guns

This, of course, presumes that reloaders are still able to obtain powder, primers and bullets.

If any POF can somehow be found these days, would the price be nearly as high as nice, reloadable Prvi .303?

For your 8MM Mauser I would stock up on .323 bullets. You can easily form your cases from 30 06 or .270. If you have reloading equipment.

My 8mm Mauser ammo is Ecuadorian mil-surp and it's Berdan primed. Does anyone know if the Berdan cases can have a new flash hole drilled and use conventional (Boxer) primers?

There is a way to Reload Berdain Primed Brass. Its a little tricky, you use Hydraulic Pressure to Deprime..
