Savage FV-12 22-250

Got my FV-12 right after the first magazine ad ten or eleven years ago. It has a 1 in 10 inch twist. Yes, i roll my own when I can. Yes, I worked a lot of hours up til recently, now semi retired. Between reloads and factory fodder I have used 40gr to 55gr bullets. Anyway, the best I ever got out of it was with 55gr Sierra's ( 3/4" groups ). I know it can do better. Getting ready to roll some 69gr Sierra's. Never shot 69's before, anyone have a pet load with the 69 they would like to share. Gonna shoot the fire out of the 69 before moving on, I now have the time to roll my own and go to the range . Any loads shared will be appreciated. Thanks

3/4" groups? That's curious, I just sighted in a friends Savage 22-250. Three shots < 0.3" He took it to a bench match the next day and won their smallest group match.

He supplied the load. 40 grain Hornaday pushed out by H-414.

Both my rifles shoot a 53 grain Seirra with H-414, into 1/2" five shot groups.

I've never been tempted by the heavier bullets in .22. Never owned one with a twist rate that I thought would stabilize them.

Try Varget for your powder the hotter the better for my Savage...
WLR Primers
Rem neck sized brass with Forester, .247 neck bushing for tension.
Nosler or Sierra 69's (Barnes has a new 69) Mine likes Nosler better.

This load is 2 grains over Max!!!

Did you get a special order rifle as Savage lists the FV 12 with 1 in 12" twist? My 12 BVSS is 1 &12 and it does very well with 52s and 55s but it"s not good with heavier stuff. I use Varget / Rem brass / Rem BR primers. It punches 1/2" groups most of the time.

Ground hog nice group!!!! My 12 won't do that it is more like a shotgun pattern then a group

I ordered it the day after savage ran the first magazine ad for the FV-12. That was 11 or twelve years ago. Had a friend order it for me. It was ordered with a 1 in 10" twist. From what you guys have put up, I need to start over from square one in my testing. The first scope I had on it was an older 6x to 16x, of course turned up to 16x. It now has a new 36X target scope siting on it. I went with the faster twist rate for the heavy bullets. I believe I need to start my testing all over again. Thanks for your comments, you made me stop and think about what I was doing.

You could easily shoot the 53 V-Max to the 75 Grain Match types.
My Savage 1-12 does the 69's with a fast/hot load. I think the 60
V-Max would be your best Varmint bullet with maximum destruction.
The new 53 V-Max has a great 290 BC that fly better than the 60's
and faster 3800+ fps.

These 53's are long (.830")and the 1-14 22-250's can't shoot them. Or the 1-12 223's can't shoot them either. They are long like the 50 grain barnes VG's
