Its not the last smelting plant and they're talking about relocating it.

I think they were a PRIMARY smelter, an ore smelter, and I think that they may well have been the last primary smelter in the country.

That is a bit troubling.

Now let's see . . . lead comes from the ground . . . but it's an "environmental hazard" to "return" it to the ground . . . . I'm just so fuzzy and warm knowing that the government is out there "looking out for my interests" and "protecting me from myself". I'd say more but I have to go and put the new "safety device" on my spoon before I use it to eat my soup.

It isn't the lead "ashes to ashes" - it is the lead "dust to dust" that causes the problems. Lead is out of waterpipes, paint, gas and toys for a reason.

Mike...

... yes, you are correct. It is indeed the last primary "smelting" plant in the country. (refining ore into a base metal).

There is no talk of re-location.

The EPA has been after this company since "08". $100 million to bring the plant up to EPA standards. If anyone reads the story I linked to above, it spells it all out pretty well.

This plant produced about 450 metric tons of product per year. China is the leading producer at almost 1.5 million metric tons/year.

Seems it's not acceptable for a US company to exceed EPA requirements, yet it's fine for China to produce 3 times as much product with ZERO environmental standards what-so-ever, and OK for it to be imported in the US.

Seriously?

Just sayin...

There is more to this smelter closure than was discussed at the link. That plant has a sordid history of lead pollution. A jury awarded citizens a multi- hundred million dollar judgement against that plant.

The issue has been discussed on this site.

Another good discussion of the issue:

Start picking up lead boys. We'll be like the Confederates who harvested it from the battlefields for recasting.

Nah, if all the smelters shut down we'll just buy it from Mexico or China at an inflated rate.

Should work fine with a patch round ball or sabots.

The dirt worshippers should love that
