What caliber? For my 22-250 it worked out to .020. The thing is the sweet spot is different for each and every rifle. Generally, it is between .030 and .015.
It's another thing your going to need to tune in for your rifle. Quote:

308 winchester...
Ye...I bought an RCBS micrometer which is used for measuring case length and comes with a device that looks like a bullet that you put into the chamber to measure bullet seating depth... It came out to like .135 of an inch...so i guess i should experiment with .125 and .115 |

RCBS Precision Mic guage
The only problem with that dummy cartridge is that the ogive on it may be different than the ogive on the bullet you chose to use.
It is a fine tool for measuring shoulder length but lacking as an OAL guage. Hornady OAL guage (Was Stoney) works well for length if you use the Comparator tool with it since you use your own bullet in the measuring process. |

I have two 700's. My .22-250 does well with .020" and I finally figured out that the .223 likes .040".
