Off to the basement to reload...
.41 Magnum and .44 Special.
Trip20 is coming into town and we're going shooting tomorrow. I'm going to load the .44 Spl. with AA 7 this time around. I've been loading it with 231, but haven't been entirely happy with the results, so I'm hoping for something a little better. |

I love AA#7. Good mid-range powder slightly slower than Unique. Should work nicely with .44 "short"....

I use a lot of it for 10mm, but never thought about using it for .44 Special.

I use it for nuclear .45 Super loads, and mid-range .45 Colt. It is a keeper powder... I will always have some around. Meters really well too...

Hey Mike,
How did the AA#7 work for you in .44 Special?

I didn't end up loading any .44 Spls. because as I was digging in one of my range ammo cans I found that I already had 75 rounds loaded with 231.
I'm not that fond of 231 in the .44 Spl. I find it to be very spotty accuracy wise. I think it's just too little powder in too big a case. There's a new powder out, I forget what it's called, that has a MUCH higher loading density. Dammit I can't remember who makes it, but it's a donut shaped powder. Mtnbkr turned me on to it. edit: FOUND IT! IMR Trail Boss. Here's an article about it. http://www.gunblast.com/IMR_TrailBoss.htm I did, however, load some .41 mag. with 13.5 grains of AA 7 with a 210-gr. hard cast lead bullet. That was a good load. Gave a good magnum thump and came very close to hitting to point of impact. |
