Winchester barrel on SR Mauser
I've been trying to find out if a Winchester 70 barrel can be rethreaded for a small ring Mauser. The Winchester threads are 1" dia and the sr Mauser threads are .980 dia. Is there enough minor diameter on the Winchester shank to do this?

Winchester barrel on SR Mauser
Yes you can do just what your thinking.
Many Mauser's have thread diameter that is smaller then documented. Also thy have a 55d degree thread not 60 There is tap from Midwayusa to fix and clean up the receiver threads. So any Winchester or Remington barrel can be converted to Small ring Mauser. |

SR bbl.
Sir;
The thread size of the small ring Mausers is .980X12 at 55 degree (most smiths thread 60 degree). As long as your shank can be turned to .980 you're home free. But - generally the small ring actions are limited to cartridges of 45,000 cup. You need to inspect your action, cracks, lug seath, etc. before re-barreling! I personall think that alot of SR actions will take more than that, yet, I wouldn't suggest it. Harry B. |

Its for a Mex Mauser. I only need to know if the minor diameter of the Winchester shank is at least .980.

Your minor diameter on the Winchester barrel is too small, but you can cut the threads off and rethread the barrel quite easily.

The Mexican Mauser actions are nice enough to rate a brand new barrel rather than a factory takeoff. A Shilen or Douglas barrel would almost undoubtedly be a more accurate tube.
